My Gettysburg safe (Rural King Brand) is HARD to close but easy to open. What is the remedy? I have to push and push the handle to the right to lock it. After entering the code it opens easily.

I’ve had stuff get in the bottom of my safe that locking bolts had to push out of the way to lock, unlocking was easy.

Probably not your issue. But you may want to check.

On many safes there is an adjustment on the side opposite the hinges. It is basically a door stop. Check to see if yours are adjustable, generally with a screwdriver, and if so, loosen the screws to adjust the door stop.

If I really wanted to know, I would open the door and then while the door is open I would lock the handle and then use the combination and open the door lock, if it opens smooth then it is not in the locking mechanism, if you have to do the same thing with the handle then you have something inside blocking your locking bolts from closing all the way. It also might be inside the door where the lock mechanism is located and might need lubing. Process of elimination!!

Lots of safes won’t let you close the handle and lock it with the door open FYI

Hey Hokkmike!!! Have you found out what is blocking your safe and making if hard to close but easy to open? I would like to know what did you find out?? I have a Winchester 32 Gun safe and the only problem I had was that the door was open and I couldn't get the rods to retract so I could close the door. Contacted the company and they paid for a safe man to come and replace the electronic key pad, which they sent a new pad, but when he got here he removed the inner door panel and found that the bolts holding the inside locking mechanism were loose. He removed the bolts, one at a time, cleaned the hole with a wire brush and solvent and used red loc-tite and replaced the bolts. I never have had a problem since then, Just want to know what you found out was causing the hard to open issue?? Thanks for letting us know cause we all have safes and could use the information if we seem to have the same problem!!!

A little late reply but I bought a Winchester "safe" from Tractor Supply Company around Black Friday. Nice "safe" but always seems to open super easy yet closing was kind of stiff.

I watched the lugs coming out of the door and noticed the bottom 2 were dragging while coming out of the door. I took the panel off the inside and straightened the locking bar. It helped immensely but still didn't seem quite right. I ended up spraying Hornady one shot case lube on the 2 bottom lugs and worked them back and forth a few times. WOW what a difference. I can easily open and close the safe with 2 fingers now.
