does anyone think they know where the safest place to live is? city, suburb, town, country, etc.?

Pluto.

Or R'lyeh, if you're cool with the management.

If we're talking physical security, the safest place to live would be in a closed compound with exceedingly wealthy people of the same demographic as yourself- that removes many purported causes for violence, leaving only that part of humanity that is pure and intrinsic evil to contend with.

Loving County Texas the Least populated county in America.

Or Mcneil Nebraska population 1

No place is really completely safe. You just have to choose what you're willing to trade for a level of safety you can live with.

It's actually pretty easy to find out what is the safest areas around wherever you live now. If you mean in your state, the whole country or the whole world, it would get a bit more complicated. ;)

+1

Otherwise, a nice small town in a red state.

Where ever you are that is where you will be. Safety comes from inside. BTW it also has nothing to do with a firearm.

I saw an abandon missle silo for sale on ebay awhile back. No one living within miles of the place. Might not be the safest place to live if you live alone as no one would hear you as fas underground as the place was.

I'm going back to my ideal location
my own private island in the S. Pacific mines in the surrounding waters. Large Mai Tai in a coconut shell in my hand ( Ala Thurston Howell The Third probably one of his goofy hats too), hideously ugly Hawiian shirt on singing " It's 5 O'Clock Somewhere"

Lee is correct on this. When you talk safe there are not only crime rates to consider. If you live in the wilderness in Montana there's no crime to speak of but if your house catches fire it will burn to the ground without a fire department nearby. People in remote areas die everyday from things that are commonly taken take of in emergency rooms in NYC, LA, Chicago. or Miami. You may have one doctor in Montana that knows how to perform some specialized medical procedure, in NYC you have 100 that do it several times a day. I'm not picking on Montana I could have picked a few dozen other states.

You may be safer in a rural area but if you like the cultural and entertainment offrerings of the big city you may be too far away to do it on a regular basis.

As Lee said it's all a trade.

M. Night Shyamalan did a movie based on this premise a few years ago - The Village. Families who had crimes committed to their loved ones packed up their belongings to go live in a secluded location. Eventually, one of their own offspring attempted a murder on another. Its actually quite a good show; I enjoyed it.

As illustrated by the movie, chasing after the answer to the safest place to live is an exercise in fantastical thinking.

I live 30 miles south of town. There is very little crime in my area that I hear about. I believe part of the reason is because to get to my home you have to cross over a pontoon bridge. So if you decide to rob, rape, murder or anything like that you can be trapped on this side of the bridge. All it takes is a phone call and the bridge attendant will open the bridge and your trapped. At the same time if you have a medical emergency he will make sure you can cross. Bad part is the wait, if your in a hurry to get home it will for sure be open. But it seems to keep the population down over here, so the crime hasn't got bad out here. It's very quiet out here other than the occasional redneck with loud mufflers on his truck. (Not putting down rednecks because I is one:D, but I don't have loud mufflers) I feel safer here than I did in town because if one of my kids go missing they'll lock the island down until they are found. I keep a very close eye on my kids and would notice them gone within a couple of minutes at the most. I know it's no guarantee, but it's a little piece of mind. I have one neighbor that I feel that I could trust and he trusts me. We look out for each others property while the other is not home and he notices who comes around my home. Also the law enforcement and ambulances drivers around here know me and have reacted very quickly in the past when needed. (My son has seizures and they have gotten here pretty quick in the past) Another great thing is that our parish pays for the cost of ambulances in an emergency. We also have a fire station within 3 miles of my home.

The safest place to live is at Ted Kennedys Hyannis compound.Guards all around the place plus 24-7 open bar.

Teddy + booze... hmm if there are automobiles around I wouldn't consider that very safe :)

Safe from what? Natural disaster, terrorists, transfats?

If... when the economy collapses, I pick outside the city. Check out "The Coming Economic Earthquake" by Larry Burkett. Not "if", but "when".

I'm wracking my brain trying to remember the formula of a friend of mine. It more or less indicated that safety is inversely proportional to freedom. Not sure if this fits into the discussion, if nor sorry.
