I’m looking at an old 16 gauge semi auto with a 2 9/16” chamber. I’ve been told that a 2 3/4” shell in that chamber will not cause a explosion that would accuse injury. But it may cause an ejection issue.

is that correct?

Yeah it probably won't cause a catastrophic failure, but it does cause accelerated wear. Just have the chamber lengthened, I had my '97 done and it works great.

Well if it was me I’d keep it original. They are getting quite rare in the shorter chamber because everybody reams them out. You can still buy the 2-9/16 shells. There is a company that’s sells them exclusively for the old brownings. Here is the link to their website: http://www.rstshells.com/

Firing 2 3/4 shells will not blow up the firearm unless there is something seriously wrong with either. Firing the longer shells in the short chamber will, however, increase recoil and cause the stock to crack, and could cause the bolt to slam into the back of the receiver and damage both the bolt and receiver. As others have mentioned, correct shells can be ordered from RST shells.
