I know the price is coming down on the Saiga 12's, but with the Tapco G2 FCG, Tapco stock and PG and a 10 rnd Surfire is this anywhere close to a reasonable deal?
I don't have a vice set-up and only have an old Makita screwdriver and would hate to screw things up. Yeah, I know, i'm a loser....but anyway, is the $899 reasonable for the set-up if I'm too inept to do the conversion myself?

I wouldn't dream of paying that for what appears to be a very basic conversion. That said the options for a basic conversion are to do it your self or pay way more than one ought to. Honestly, if I were you I would get a stock gun, start reading up a lot on the S12 and then go buy a drill (or borrow one if you'd rather) and order the parts you have decided you want on it. You will be money ahead, the gun will be configured how you wanted it and you will not only have a sense of accomplishment you will fully understand how your gun works. You'll also have a drill, and they are handy to have.

It is very very hard to screw up a basic conversion. Furthermore, I don't know who did the work on that gun but in the past the quality and procedures of some of the off the shelf basic conversions has been questionable. Some companies have sought to pump them out as quickly and cheaply as possible. If you do it you will have a vested interest in making it turn out nice and that is why most home conversions turn out pretty nice.

It really is a perfect DIY project. It is very easy even if one is not mechanically inclined.

I feel certain that you can buy a plain S12 for 600 otd maybe less I do not know. I do know that I just spent 150 to convert one and could have done it cheaper if I had modified my trigger housing myself. So thats 750 total, tops. The conversion is easy, trust me it's not rocket science. Go to the Saiga12Forum plenty of help, how to videos. etc. For me it is an economical fun gun to shoot with the Wally World Federal 100cnt for about 22 dollars.

Yeah, I've seen them at Gilberts for around $520. So get a Tapco G2, a reasonable drill, a punch and hammer and a Dremel. Watch the videos and go huh? I called J&G and they don't come with the factory 8 mag as well. I haven't heard great things about the aftermarket ones.
All told, sounds like I'll go with a NIB stock model and do the rest myself.
Along those lines, any stocks to avoid or come highly recommended?

I'm not a big fan of the tapco folders or the tapco 6 position telescoping stock. The tapco standard AK stock works just fine though.

Do you want a fixed stock, a folder, AR style or what?

There is a company called Chaos that will soon market an all metal 8rnd 12g mag. If they work that will be the way to go. I use Surefire 8rnd rock and load mags and have been satisfied with them. They can be had for less than 40 bucks.

Do not forget that MD arms is supposed to be releasing a double stack mag. Tony Rumore reported that he has seen the double stack and it ran flawlessly. A double stack will be very interesting and might well be THE saiga mag to own, particularly if it works with his forth coming mag well.
