Howdy, folks. You saw the title. Which one should I get? The primary use would be HD and the secondary purpose would be plinking. I don't intend on shooting in any competitions, so that's not a factor.

Now yes, the Saiga 12 is an assault weapon in CA. But silly laws like that don't bother me...Just kidding. In the US mail system is a out-of-state military assault weapons permit. When I get back from the desert, I'll purchase one and bring it back with me. (I go to the dirt in about 80ish days).

Get the Saiga just because. It may not always be readily available; it's not a common gun and it's an easy target for an import ban.

Get the 870 for HD, especially in places where the Saiga is a banned "assault weapon." Sometimes, image is very important in a self-defense case, should a DA want to make a name for himself (a common disease these days, it seems).

A "jury of your peers" is often really a jury of people who had no way of getting out of being on the jury. That would be different from "your peers." And some judges are pro-2A, whereas some judges are rabidly anti-everything including guns.

Just my 2 cents.

You have zero shotguns. The first one you buy should be a GP, versatile shotgun usable for defense, clays, food gathering and recreation.

Any US made modern pumpgun fills the bill nicely. The Saiga, which I want one of, is more of a combat tool.

Or, one of each. For less than a grand, one could be exceedingly well equipped....

I CANT FIND A SIAGA-12 :( I actually went out looking today and NO ONE has it in stock. Maybe I will take a peek online or maybe someone can shoot me a link.

It's not my first shotgun. I do have a 20ga. But it's not quite HD material. It's extremely long, bolt action (and I'm a lefty), and it only has a 2+1 capacity. I can't find any extra magazines for it so the only practical purpose is hunting and if I ever decide to get into it, busting clays.

Get the Saiga if you can find a 19" barrel version. You can have it converted to an AK pistol grip and high cap mags but the resulting total cost will be 800+. It will be sweet, and rare.

You can get a Remmy 870 or Mossberg 500 HD shotgun and then an extra barrel that takes chokes for skeet, etc. for a lot less.

Oh yeah there are screw on chokes for the externally threaded Saiga Barrels as well but they are expensive and you have to order them from a Russian company.

One of the most useful attributes of the shotgun is the ability to use the weapon for many different purposes with a simple ammo change. The pump gun is just a matter of operating the slide, dumping out the round on the elevator, and dropping in whatever is needed, such as a slug. Additionally, most autos (I have seen and handled the Saiga, but have not actually fired one) do not lend themselves really well to the load one shoot one technique. Utilizing this technique, one can place a round downrange about every 2 seconds for as long as the ammo holds out. Many of the autos lock open when the last shell is fired, and lend them selves to a load 2 shoot 2 technique. I do have an AK-47, and it does not lock open. If the Saiga is the same, the only quick recovery for running dry is to have an extra loaded magazine.

All in all, in my opinion (everybody has one), the pump is much more versatile than the auto for HD purposes.

Don't get me wrong, I would love to have one of the Saigas and think it would be great fun, but in an HD situation, I will reach for the 870.

They should have them in stock, and at a good price.

Thanks for the link but they dont actually sell the Siaga-12 shotgun. Went to the local gun dealer (largest in Colorado) and they do not sell them either. Anyone know where I can order one through my local FFL?

Thanks!

buy both, you'll feel better.

This message sponsored by your id: because the more shotguns you have, the happier your world will be :D

Then what is this?

That's what I was going to say!

They sell them, and have a great price, and also sell converted ones from Tromix.

As I understand it the choice is between a Saiga semi auto and a Remmington pump with the following in mind:

" The primary use would be HD and the secondary purpose would be plinking. I don't intend on shooting in any competitions, so that's not a factor".

I think the Pump will work every time and the semi auto most of the time. If HD or a SHTF scenario is involved I would want maximum reliability. Especially in a sudden, unforseen, choke you guts out fear tinged HD scenario. Don't you?

Regards,
:):):)

Tony does do one hell of a job but last i heard he's backlogged through september and not taking on more work until then.

Tromix Saigas

Tony is not taking any new orders until Sept 1st; and if you want a Tromix Saiga, buy it direct from him - not a reseller

Right now they all - modded and unmodded - seem to be in extremely short to non-existent supply.

Aaryq,
not to throw a wrench in your plans, but I take it your state of residence is not CA and you will only be stationed here? If you are a CA resident you will be out of luck.
I also would like to get a Saiga at some pint too just cause, but I think you would be much better off with the 870 for a multi-purpose SG and HD. You would also be less likely to "scare" the sheep with the 870, and yes it is unfortunate that you have to conceder it. just my 2 cents.

Personally, I'd go with the 870. I don't feel the Saiga has the reliability of other AK's, but it is a lot of fun.

Well my HD shotgun is a converted saiga. A bolt hold open can be installed on the saiga, accepts box magazines, and there are two different manufacturers of 20rnd drums.

The 10rnd AGP mags aren't 100% reliable but the factory mags are. The problems I have with the AGP mags is the feed angle is a little high sometimes and they get jammed up. Hopefully the 20rnd drums from MDarms.com will be for sale soon and will be 100% reliable.
