I was looking at a P229 today, and the salesman said they are expensive to shoot because they only take Sig Ammo. He then showed me a 357 SIG round and said "You have to buy sig ammo for these, and its more expensive".

Now, the P229 I was holding happened to be a .40. And on the sig site, it says they can fire a 9mm, a 40, or a 357 SIG.

I am not familiar with Sigarms, so I am going to clarify it here: can the P229/226 fire any 9mm or .40 s&w? or is there some secret sig ammo I don't know about (besides the 357 sig)

That salesman is full of it...the gun will shoot the round it's designed to shoot. Conversion barrels can be bought to shoot different calibers, but if you were holding a P229 in .40, then it's gonna shoot .40...

And no, there's no secret Sig round. ;-)

Jesus. That guy is an idiot and you are an idiot if you buy a gun from him.

Sig guns will load and fire any ammo which is the right calibur for the gun.

Federal, Winchester, Cor Bon and even crap you load yourself!

that is what I figured, he was just some doofus behind the counter at the sporting goods store.

he even said "here look, this is a 357 SIG, and this is a 357 MAG, see they're different".

I just wanted to be 100% sure on this, and he was obviously not the guy to ask.

I am willing to bet that he had been trying to get you to purchase something else. That is why he was discouraging you from purchasing a Sig due to the high cost of ammo.

I myself want to get a Sig 228 in 9mm. I also want a nonrailed 226 in 9mm.

"can the P229/226 fire any 9mm or .40 s&w?"
The 9mm models fire 9mm Luger/9mm Parabellum, the .40 S&W models fire .40 S&W. Any decent brand of ammo ought to run perfectly fine.

so from that guy. i suppose only .40/.500 s&w can be shot from a s&w.

a 45 gap can only be shot from a glock.

223 remingtion and other remy rounds can only be shot from a remington. there goes all the of the ar15 rifles down the tube.

270 win only shot from a winchester.

357/41/44magnum only shot from a desert eagle since its magnum research.

theres probably alot more ammo but thats all that comes to mind.

Perhaps you misunderstood the saleman trying to inform you that the particular .357SIG chambered pistol would not fire 9mm or .40 and that .357SIG is more expensive than either?

If you want to entertain, post your experience on the SIG Forum. Whatever you do, don't listen to this clerk as you make your gun choice. Yes, the .357 SIG was developed by SIG based on LE requests, but the P229 for .40 or .357 SIG will accept a drop-in barrel for either. It also comes in 9mm, which my agency chose to replace the P228. The P229 in 9mm has the same frame as the .40 and .357 SIG, but you need to replace the slide as well as the barrel if you want to convert to the other calibers. The .357 SIG will fit any pistol chambered for it. I find the .357 SIG to be a very zippy round, some 1350 - 1400 fps, that is absolutely flat. It makes my little P239 one of the most accurate handguns I own.

Hahahahahaha!

Maybe this guy shouldn't be working there. Of all the reading and teaching and discussion about guns I've never heard that one from even the greenest of noobs.

Was this a large corporate retailer or small shop?

Of course there's secret SIG ammo. What do you think Jack Bauer uses in his SIGs to make them uber-accurate? :D

No.. no. We were looking at a 229 .40SW. He then grabbed a box of 357 SIG, 357 MAG, and then proceeded to look for the 9MM SIG and 45 SIG, but said "we don't have any of those."

He had no idea what he was talking about. I gather he was just an employee manning the gun counter without any special knowledge. This was at a semi-large local sporting goods store.

At least he let me dry fire it about 20 times.

There IS an uber-secret SIG-made round for their pistols. Not civvie legal - not that you folks could handle the tremendous recoil we NATO SpecOps guys are used to, anyway*. Pretty expensive, due to the special manufacturing process. Each SIG serial number corresponds to a slightly different barrel - and the ammo is custom made for your barrel. Tack driver? It's a toothpick driver. Sub-MOA accuracy. SIG's HEAPIT* rounds are manufactured to the highest standards available. The Raufoss HEAPIT rounds are also top notch, but they don't have the extreme accuracy the SIGs do.

SIG's attempt at copying the ceramic Glock 7 in a Titanium pistol (P700, 707, 717's due for release by October) used nothing but 8mm HEAPIT-NF(non-ferrous) rounds. Like all the non-ferrous pistols, it had some issues, most of which are no longer seen.

*We regularly carry four-barrel derringers in .50 BMG, with moonclipped reloads.
*HEAPIT: High Explosive Armor Piercing Incendiary Tracer, standard issue SpecOps rounds. Don't swallow those bullets unless you want a case of heartburn at 330 degrees Celsius.

and then proceeded to look for the 9MM SIG

huh...

that sounds uber-tactical:what:

I better go check out my 226 for all the damage i did..since all i've been feeding it is 9MM WWB

I guess I better go out and buy super expensive 9MM GAP:D for my G17 as well

WHAT A TOOL

I'd really like to know which retailer this was. I'm out of 9mm RAP and 9mm CAP and my local store stopped stocking it.

If you buy a .357 SIG chambered firearm, then he is correct--you have to use "SIG" calibre ammo for it. Otherwise, he's full of it.

C'mon guys, give the counter guy a break. He probably thought he was right but really knew nothing about guns. Even though he was totally wrong he probably wasn't trying to mislead anyone. Cut him some slack....

Yep.

This was my first thought before reading that the salesman was comparing boxes of .357mag/sig. Obviously someone's misunderstanding either way.

You should have told him that you were interested in buying some of this ".40 Sig" ammo telling him that the ".357 Sig" wouldn't work because the numbers weren't the same. Then when he couldn't produce any of this ".40 Sig" ammo, ask him why he doesn't carry ammo for the guns that he sells and tell him to order you some of this ".40 Sig" ammo. ;) :D

I wasn't really clear before, but he specifically said "Sig makes their own ammo".

And he meant they manufacture their own ammo that their guns require.

That was the best part.
