Serious? I work in AZ corrections, and I am required to attend a minimum of40 hours POST training every year.
That (24 hours/2 years) was the standard when I retired in 1999. I highly doubt it has changed much since then.

CA is not the modern progressive state some would like us to think it is.

There's another aspect of this case that came out today. The brother of the guy that was shot is wanted for a hit and run earlier this week in San Diego. I'm not sure if there's any connection between this outcome and the earlier case at all. Interesting though...

Possibly the SDSD could use a little more drill on weapons retention, hand-to-hand and general arrest procedure?

It does appear to be a justified shoot, but the struggle appears to me to be the result of an officer hesitating to use sufficient force soon enough. A DUI and a busted knee would still beat being dead.

...And (trust me on this, I have actual experience) if ever you must deal with police as a suspect, don't run. It rarely ends well for you. Not only will you not get away, human beings are wired up to dump a lot of adrenaline when in pursuit; that means they're all jacked up when they do catch you. Sure, LEOs are trained to deal with this, but they're not robots. Unless it's TEOTWAWKI, smile and make nice.

You have ran from the police before?

Long story, years ago. Left a bar rapidly when a fight broke out between large and ugly men with many friends, bounced off police headed in as I was headed out. Kept moving. Things went downhill rapidly after that.

While it turns out Being Stupid In Public isn't an actual crime and "fleeing an officer" is only a misdemeanor, a little less tunnel vision would have made for a nicer night and a whole lot less of a lawyer's bill.

Really don't run. They don't have any sense of humor about it while it is happening.

Thank goodness the police officer is alive, first and foremost.

Secondly, a perp with a baton is absolutely a deadly force situation. You always want to use a tool one step above what your opponent is using.

Step back for a minute and think, what would you do if someone is swinging a metal blunt object at you? You better say you'd shoot him if you want to live.

And OC? As a police officer myself, I've been sprayed and have sprayed others. Believe me, it very often does not work. Adrenaline is kicked in, and alcohol, meth, etc...and people just don't respond to OC the way you think they are going to.

Very good shoot, strike one up for the good guys.
