Anyone living there might want to use the author's email address to start fighting this...

Mom takes on gun-show billboards

She sees the violence guns have brought to her community, so the last thing Bevelynn Bravo wants is for them to be advertised around her neighborhood.

In her five-year crusade, Bravo has tried to stop billboard operators from advertising gun shows in her Lincoln Park community. She doesn't blame them for the violence directly, but she said, she doesn't think gun sales should be promoted.

“I feel like they are contributing to the deaths in this community,” Bravo said. “The gun-show billboards aren't doing us any good.”

Bravo has teamed with the Coalition of Neighborhood Councils, a nonprofit community group, to help her collect signatures and support. Her efforts have gotten the attention of San Diego City Councilman Tony Young.

The councilman is working with the City Attorney's office to see if gun-show advertisements can be kept off billboards in his Fourth District, said Jimmie Slack, Young's spokesman.

The city has an agreement with Viacom and Clear Channel – two of the largest billboard operators in the city – that prohibits alcohol advertisements in certain locations, Slack said. For example, a billboard advertising beer can't be within 500 feet of a school and city recreation center.

Crossroads of the West, which puts on gun shows at Del Mar Fairgrounds, contracts with Viacom. The Utah-based company had a show in January and four more are planned this year. The next show is scheduled for April 8 and 9.

Viacom determines where the show is advertised, said Tracy Olcott, who handles billboard marketing for the gun show.

“We have no say in where they go,” she said.

A Viacom representative did not return calls seeking comment.

Bravo, a mother of four, began her fight when her daughter read a gun-show sign while on a walk. She didn't think children or any youth in her community should be reading signs advertising guns.

Bravo said she called Viacom to complain and was told the signs would be removed. But, she said, the signs reappeared as a new gun show rolled into the Del Mar Fairgrounds.

“Every year, we go through the same thing,” Bravo said.

This time, Bravo is not fighting alone.

Bravo took her petition to a January meeting of the Coalition of Neighborhood Councils and got support from other community leaders in District 4. They are helping by collecting signatures on a petition in their neighborhoods.

Dwayne Crenshaw, the coalition's executive director, said although his organization supports First Amendment rights, he hopes the billboard companies listen to the community.

“This is an issue of broad concern,” he said.

There were 155 shooting-related incidents last year in the Police Department's Southeastern Division, according to police records. That's a decrease of 40 from the previous year.

For Bravo, getting rid of the gun-show advertisements is just one way to make her community feel a little safer.

“Some things are just long term and you can't find solutions too fast,” Bravo said. “But, we'll continue to fight.”

Maybe if you stopped your whinning went to one bought a gun and learned how to use it you and your neighbors might do some good in the community when the police are five? ten minutes away? and the violence she speaks of happens and the under privliged youth hanging around learn their neighborhood is no longer an easy target.

The second biggest problem in California is the politicians pander to the lowest common denominator - dumb & dumber isn't a movie here its a way of life.

The biggets problem is all these so called "liberals" who want to control everthing and everyones life and viewpoints, opinions, etc.! Isn't contoling evrything a fascist viewpoint?

She doesn't think children should view gun ads - well I think she shouldn't be allowed to make decisions since she is an uninformed .....

The bad thing is the politicians jump on it and the liberal media pound it over and over on the news along with outright lies preached as fact against guns. These same friggin people won't spend time with their children and teach them - oh no, thats the states job!

By the way - the police are NEVER 5 or 10 minutes away in a major urban area of Cal. - you cannot even get through 911 in less than 15 minutes! 30 minutes is a quick answer time - then there are the 100 questions before response. If ever a state needed CCW its Cal.

Let's ban soccer! Thousands of years of civilization in which mankind learns to use their hands and tools. Along comes soccer and now you can't use your hands. No one needs to play soccer.

You can see how this mindset works. First the 2nd amendment, then they go after the 1st amendment, until we all live in a giant nursery which of course people like this maroon will be running. No thanks, I'll take my chances.

This a crock a bull story.

Everyone knows California no longer has gun shows.

CA gun shows suck anyway.

EDIT: Regardless.. the fact that this women is trying to get these billboards taken down show how unbelievably stupid people are here. The gun show happens about 40 miles from this Woman's house.. She lives down South and the shows are in North San Diego County. Gun shows here suck for buying guns.. waiting periods and everything still apply at gun shows. might as well just go to the gun store. Gun shows are mostly for buying ammo in bulk and getting gun accessories.. bipods, holsters, etc. there's usually a lot of selection since so many shops are there.. There's also a lot of military surplus gear there. Like old Nazi helmets and such.

Has she seen what's on her own television set? Bet her kids watch MTV.

Apparently they don't support the Second Amendment also.

"Daughter read a billboard"

Obviously she sends her kids to private school if the daughter can read.

This woman doesn't like the 2nd amendment and it seems she isn't too happy about that Freedon of Expression thing in the 1st either.

I love how people say things like that just before they do something to show that they do nothing of the support.

Local police chief Wiggum quoted as saying, "We support the second amendment, but think no one other than LEO's should own guns."

I support Democrats and republicans but think we should ban them both.
