The Sandusky (Ohio) Register published the names, town, and ages of concealed carry permit holders in 5 Ohio counties yesterday. They are running a long article this morning defending their actions as promoting open government and against two classes of government records.

This leads to their main page and all the articles, comments, and lists can be reached from there.

Ok folks, it's time to mobilize and shut these idiots down like we did to the Roanoke Times. Suggest to the Moderators to move this thread to Activism.

OH folks, it might be best for you to lead the charge.

Let's get some FOIA requests going for the Editors to include: Phone number, home address, tax information, etc.

Let's nail 'em!

I thought that the legislature had addressed this aspect of Ohio CCW law...guess not. The good news is that this might get them to move more quickly to prevent this kind of thing from happening again in the future.

The media treat lawful CCW holders like criminals and then they wonder why they themselves are held in such low regard?

The obsession with "outing" makes me wonder what the real motive underlying this might be...

No good can come of this.

Dang, Roanoke I had to actually search for the list. These guys have it right on their front page in all caps.

For some reason I don't think the 'reporters' that publish this garbage and the others that advocate its publishing would think it very funny to have their names, ages, and places of residence published on the net. I think I'll have to do some public information searches on property tax's...

This is nothing more than an attempt to coerce people into not getting a ccw.

It's intimidation pure and simple. The reporters and editors who pull these stunts know full well how the information could be misused. They either don't care, or hope that information will be used by criminals.

As for their "right to know" tripe, the "right to know" ends when knowing would endanger the life and property of another.

That's exactly what happened to the editor of the Cleveland Plain Dealer. He seemed genuinely surprised that someone would dare turn the tables on him.

Don't forget to write your state legislators. If the media can't use the access responsibly and instead turns it into a harassment tool, the records need to be off limits.

The on-line article linked in the activism thread http://sanduskyregister.com/articles/2007/06/25/front/321675.txt is slightly different than the one linked from the paper's main page. It includes this paragraph that is not in the other article:
Other recent exemptions that have been pressed by state lawmakers include limiting access to coroner's reports and preliminary records, in addition to other documents and information about foster families.
Intersting that when these self-proclaimed "freedom of information" crusaders get on their high horse, it's only against us dangerous, evil CHL holders. BTW, having a CHL does not necessarily mean that one owns a gun, and certainly not every gun owner has a CHL.

So why don't they out coroner reports and foster families to prove their "freedom of information" point?

To really give them a jolt, go to their advertisers. (See list in the activism thread ). Newspapers depend on advertising revenue to survive. On the other hand advertisers pay to attract business, not get into a controversy that isn't of their making. E-mails, telephone calls, or personal visits to these business will hit the paper where it hurts. Rants sent to the editor simply make him happy. He want you to be mad... but not effective in hitting back.

Give him a surprise...

I'm glad I live in a state with a little sanity. That crap is against the law here. News scum can't get a list of CCDW holders in KY.

I do not approve of this type of publishing activity.

However, why is it such an awful thing? I'm curious.

People say it is dangerous to them, to have the public know they are permit holders. How is it dangerous?

I thought being armed was supposed to make you less of a target by criminals.

Could it jeopardize your employment? Will it ruin relationships with people you had who didn't know you carried concealed? If so, best not knowing them.

Is it a violation of the Constitution?

Again, I'm not being difficult; I'm just wondering if there was something I missed as far as all the outrage is concerned.

Interesting - I posted the writer's information above on the newspaper's discussion-board this afternoon - and now it's gone. It seems that one may not post anything "that violates a third party's right to privacy". Talk about irony!

Yeah, freedom of speech is all good and well until you say something they don't like.... :scrutiny:

Because... The list provides "one stop shopping" for any crook looking for a house that probably has weapons in it. That would be my concern. I can't be home all the time, and I sure can't carry 'em all! Kinda like advertising there is jewelry or anything else valuable in your house.
