I seem to recall that back in the 1980's, satin nickel finishes on handguns were quite the rage, especially on pistols from South America.

Then they just disappeared. What happened? Did it turn out to be too expensive, or not as durable as thought, or what?

Was this an electroless nickel finish, or some other method of applying nickel? Electroless nickel is still offered by many companies specializing in refinishing and plating services. My K9 came from the factory with electroless nickel and EABCO applied such a finish to my Kimber for a fair price.
Both my Kimber and Kahr have a finish that could be described as a satin nickel or somewhat of a bead blasted look.

A word on durability... I haven't carried the Kimber or subjected it to much holster abuse, but the K9 has been carried steadily since '96 when purchased new and today sports not even a faint hint of holster wear. I can guarantee you had it been blued, I'd be looking into having refinished about now. Though not as tough as hard chrome, electroless nickel is quite durable and aesthetically pleasing.
I remains my favorite firearm finish.

I have a CZ-75B and a CZ-83, both with satin nickle. Also,my Kimber Custom Defender II has what appears to be a satin nickle finish. I've carried this pistol every day for 3+ years and it has no holster wear.

What happened?
The EPA happened.

*Long story short - chemicals are bad - make using them so expensive via hazardous substance regulations mfg's drop them.
No EPA outside of the USA, so foreign makers can still plate.
Domestic mfg's respond by switching to alternative (stainless steel), then put on huge marketing push to tout ss as superior to any plated finish.
Demand for ss grows, and foreign makers respond by tooling up for ss instead of carbon steel.
Some small domestic specialty shops crop up with alternative (maybe better maybe not) process which has EPA's blessing.

Bottom line is that both bright and satin Nickel are late 19th centruy finishes in the 21st century. There's better finishes available for a cheaper price.

Under the bottom line - none look as good as the real deal (either bright or satin Nickel) IMHO. The Browning HP in silver chrome comes close though. It had me "fooled" for a while.

*Obviously this is very short on details. A google search for "plating" will give you many hours of reading.
www.finishing.com is a good place to start.
Followup by searching for the terms and termanology used.
It's interesting to see how a gvt agency like the EPA, with no real justification for being in existance and 100% out of the control of "We the people" has seized so much economic and social power over us.

Electroless nickle was overshadowed by the refinement of the stainless steel handgun.
One the heat treating and galling problems were solved Stainess Steel sales took off.
ELN is pretty tough but Stainless never wears off.
