From what I understand, this is a pretty common issue, but I am having feeding problems from the proprietary magazine the rifle ships with. A friend of mine with the exact same rifle has the exact issue. About half the rounds in the ten round mag simply won't be caught by the bolt and stripped off.

These rifles used to come with an all metal magazine system, but now it's an aftermarket accessory (and a pricey one given the price of the rifle)

I contacted Savage and they sent me a new magazine (but it's exactly the same as what I have so it won't help) So I guess my question is, I'm looking at $175 to make my rifle functional, and I'm not too pleased with that. Anyone else run into this issue? Any better results from Savage? I have seen some threads about people bending the spring to increase tension, but that seems like a hokey solution.

"I contacted Savage and they sent me a new magazine (but it's exactly the same as what I have so it won't help)"

FWIW, I have one of those, and both of my stock mags work fine.

I have tried the action in an MDT chassis that uses AICS mags, and some AICS pattern mags work and some don't, so go figure. The polymer AICS mags (MDT and Magpul) also force a shorter COAL than the stock one.

At the risk of stating the obvious, make sure you're not short stroking it. Mine had a bit of a hitch in the bolt stroke when new, and sometimes I'd inadvertently short stroke it. That has smoothed out after a few hundred rounds. It's also relatively easy to mot have the mag fully seated; I always tug mine down hard to make sure it's fully seated,

I hear that some people have these and have no issues, I guess we're just unlucky. Though I did go over to a Savage forum and there are plenty with the same issue. Yeah, no short stroke, I can run the bolt open and closed a hundred times, you can see where the rounds just aren't high enough to be caught or the follower has the rounds tilted. If I tap the bottom of the mag it usually rights itself.

interesting, ive never looked at any of savaged dbm....buts that exactly the same metal as whats in the blind magazine, with what looks like a plastic extension stuck on the end. If you push the bottom of the mag up by hand and cycle the action will it pick up a cartridge? or are the rounds not coming up all the way, also does it do this not mater how many rounds are in the mag or only once youve reached a certain number of rounds in the mag?

I dont like the looks of those magazines either way......One of the things i dislike about my savage is the mag box.....

Yes, if I tap or push up on the mag I can coax the next round into being picked up. I happens across the board sometimes five or six times through one ten round mag. We've tried to note a pattern but there doesn't seem to be one.

try loading 5 empty cartridges then 5 live and see what happens, spring could be weak, but im betting box itself is dragging on the rounds or the follower. The replacement from savage MAY work if thats the case, just be carefull with it if it does lol

So I'm still having the same issue with feeding. Wrote Savage again. The odds are astronomical of my mag and this replacement mag both having issues. Trying to decide now whether to buy the new bottom metal or just sell the rifle and move on.

Will savage issue a call tag for the rifle fix it and send it back to you in good order ? I have been happy with my savages , can't you send the rifle back for repair? I know if I bought a rifle from someone and the private seller knows it's faulty I would be upset unless the private seller told me that the rifle has issues or the price was reduced to reflect a possible defective rifle,
I would talk to savage about sending the rifle back to them ?

Yeah, I can send it back, but nothing is wrong with the rifle and would be a waste of time. The magazine is simply terrible. As it stands there are no aftermarket mags made I could try. As far as selling it, I'm pretty straight forward, the rifle functions fine, it just has a fussy mag system that does not feed reliably. Someone interested in a paper punching bench gun may not care as much.

That stinks hopefully they come out with a update magazine , I put a 10fcp sr on layaway will pick it up next week has a 10 round mag we can compare numbers on the mag see if there is a difference?

Sounds good, I appreciate it. It really bums me out to because otherwise I love the rifle and it's a tremendous value for how well it shoots. The number on my mag is 110307.

I just got an email back from them, I asked them if they sold any other bottom metal or mag style besides the half plastic half metal that would work, this was their response.

"Good Day -

The magazine that we have for your model is half and half. We do have a metal frame assembly (item# 106705). I cannot guarantee that it will work for what you are looking for. The current price is $78+$11 (S&H in the US). Call 800-370-0708 option 4 or 5 to place your order with our Service Department. We accept most major credit cards.

Thank you,
Cindia"

sure give a week when I pick up the rifle,
There service department is lagging I called twice in the last few weeks wanting to up grade some sights on a 11 hog hunter and the girl was clueless I ask if there is a online parts department I can look up my on parts she said that the parts link on their web sight is down for upgrades so I don't know I to am frustrated with Savage parts dept. anyway give me a week and I will add some pictures and numbers of the mag I get to the thread

Well Hanzo581 are you going to give that factory part a try if so please let me know if it works for you I am curious about this issue because yes I am experiencing the same problem myself!

I am not very confident dropping $89 on a part when they say "I cannot guarantee that it will work for what you are looking for.". Their parts site is down so I can't see even what it looks like.

That's what I am having issues with their parts dept, can't get help and yes the online parts in been down for awhile now , frustrated at best

"Yeah, I can send it back, but nothing is wrong with the rifle and would be a waste of time."

I'm not sure I follow. It seems like either you have 2 bad mags, or a bad rifle. Let them figure it out. They might discover both mags were bad, or that the stock was bad, or the mag latch, or whatever. They can, should, and I expect would do whatever it takes to make it work, up to and including a complete new rifle.

That would get it fixed and I could be a rifle issue, something your not seeing

I can tell you mine is terrible as well. It will usually load the first round, but after that the back of the mag will drop ever so slightly making it so the next round won't grab. I have to physically lock the mag back up and try and chamber the next round. The problem is not just the mag but the mag catch as well, they simple suck and will not keep hold the the mag. Usually if I get it locked good, it will stay; but I cannot get it to stay if I load more the 5 rounds. Eventually I will replace the setup with a CDI Precision trigger guard and AICS mag. When I bought the rifle, I expected crappy magazine based on reviews I read.

This is depressing I just bought one , picking it up next week and having my Vortex Viper I just bought mounted on it
sure hope I did not buy a lemon not exactly a cheap set up model 10 fcp-sr and a Vortex Viper I know its not top notch but no low end either I expect it
to work.

Yeah, if it were the rifle, or the mag well or catch for that matter it wouldn't work sometimes but not others. I've felt like an idiot running so many dummy rounds through the gun to see if I could note a pattern, but there isn't one. I can see the round (when the problem happens) slightly canted in the magazine just barely being missed by the bolt. Slap the bottom of the mag, works fine, shake the rifle, works fine. I don't claim to be a genius but I know enough to know it is the magazine. As I noted in the original post my shooting buddy bought the exact rifle and is having the exact issue, he's ordering the bottom metal replacement that allows AICS mags, but I am a little cheaper than he is, and feel I shouldn't have to pay $175 to get my gun working properly. (or even $89 for the mystery part Savage is trying to sell me)

JO JO, it's a fantastic rifle outside of the magazine. I hope yours works well.

Well let's see, will post mag info when it is in my hands courious I am

Outside of the mag issue, it's an outstanding rifle. It's stupid accurate and with an Alamo 4 Star (ZRODelta) muzzle break, it only kicks slightly more than my AR. If you concentrate on really locking the back side of the mag it's not too bad. Just don't wimpy install the mag and that will help.
