Here's my situation: I recently got a Savage 110 BA, ordered a Nightforce 8-32X54 NXS and nightforce rings. Since I often do more research AFTER I buy something I learned the elevation limitations of this scope. The 110 BA comes with a 20 MOA base (along with the copious amount of rail that comes with it) and was wondering about putting in a shim if I needed more elevation out past 1000 meters. I saw snipers in Iraq cut a small piece of water bottle and put it between the scope and the rear ring to get more elevation. I am thinking, that since this will put stress on the maintube of the scope, what I would do is take the monsterous rail system off the gun and place a plastic shim under the mount toward the rear and screw the it back on. This would give me another 20 MOA (rough guess) of elevation right???
I have yet to shoot this beast, and am working on putting together some rounds (Lapua brass, 300gr Berger hybrids, Retumbo, Federal Gold Match primer) but this scope issue is bugging me. I should have gone with the 5.5-22X50 :banghead: but there is no going back now. The thought of having a 32 power scope was more enticing at the time....

I would not bother with the knight force rings, and use the Burris signature series rings.
Why!?
Well they have a polymer insert that come in offset values. (.010 & .005")
You can put the + .010 in the back ring, and the - .010" insert set in the front.
This will give you additional "available" elevation in your scope.
The inserts self align to eliminate scope stress.

I have a 110BA, in 300 win Mag. And this setup is effective out to 1900 yards (1 MOA).
Hope this helps.

You can get shims from sinclair. I agree with your thought on shimming the rail, not the ring. How much elevation does that scope give you?

What's your target at 1900yds?

I read some where that if you used 35mm camera film, the thickness of the film would give you an extra 5 to 10 moa. Problem nowadays is everything is digital. May you got some undeveloped film or negatives.

Thanks everyone! I am going to see how it works as is, but those burris rings are interesting...
