I've not fired any in it cause I suspect the bullet is jammed into the lands.

This could be cause by one of two things:
M2 ball is longer than the throat on my rifle and my garand, which feeds it fine, has a bit of a longer throat on it

OR

My rifle doesnt have a normal length throat and the lands are closer than what you would normally expect...

So which is it..
IS M2 ball known to be long, or pushing the limits of the saami specs

OR

Is it more likely that my savage just doesnt have much of a throat leading into the lands?

Now, some of my grandpas reloads for the garand chamber like a dream, and are easy to eject. The ejection could be a primarly extraction issue, but I'm suspecting its not. I'll be trying some sized but not primed/loaded brass tomorrow to see if that stuff is hard to extract.. might need to bump the shoulder back from my M1 loads...

I would bet the problems is the rifle and not the M2 ball. I use different lots of both M1 and M2 ball in Garands, 1903's and 1917's, mostly HXP, FA and LC.

Find a smith with a '06 chamber reamer.

Bernie.. you're just in on the other joke I have..

I just traded some 308 brass for some 06 brass.. 100 for 100. I got 98 30-06 brass, 1 25-06 brass, and 1 270win brass. I figured close enough lets neck these puppies up. The 270 did great and got trimmed down to correct length.. that 25-06.. not so much.

Mad - I run this stuff through the Garand too.. but the garand has a more generous leade and chamber. Its not the first time I've encountered ammo that wouldn't load in a tight chamber.. just didnt think that'd be a problem with the savage.

scythefwd,

You're just guessing on the throat being too short, and since M2 ball loaded with a 152 FMJ does not require a long throat at all, I would take a black magic marker to that M2 ball case and bullet and try chambering it and see definitely where the hang up is.

Did as you suggested USSR.. its the bullet making contact early, very early. It removed the bullet in the bore.. I had to tap it out with a jag. The brass ejects perfectly and easily.. so it is a short throat...

You can see the ring up there about 1/2 inch in front of the case mouth...

;)

Did you buy this rifle new? Savage rifles used may have had the barrel taken of and put back on for some reason. Easy to do with the Savage. Have you had a set of gauges chambered yet? If not new to you the rifle may have worn another caliber barrel at some time then returned to 3006 in someones garage.

Lets see a photo of the rifle. You could also check with Savage to see how it was originally sold. If you bought it new then you should really contact Savage.

Good luck.

If you bought it used maybe it had a different barrel on it and when changed back the chamber was not checked. How long is that M2 ammo and what make is it . Is it over 2.810 . Should be closer to 2.750 for the nato loads. Not reloads right? How does it cycle factory 308 loads. Check local smiths for a 308 go-no go gauge to check your chamber.

Hardluk. m2 is 30-06. Its factory Lake city loads, primer is still sealed.. not marked like grandpa marked his reloads. I'd assume it'd cycle 308 just fine.. but there'd be a lot of excess headspace ;)

Don - it will chamber the factory winchester silvertip I have.

I thought the savages had long throats too.. which is what made this so odd to me. Not the first rifle to not load this stuff though.

Its a savage barrel, but its a used rifle so no telling if it has been screwed with. No, I haven't had it checked with nogo/go gauges yet. Next on the list. I see no evidence that the barrel has been removed.. but that doesnt mean anything.
