Picked up a model 170 pump rifle yesterday in 30-30 made by Savage in the early 70's.
Haven't shot it yet, but I did get some dies with it. My son outgrew his youth sized shotgun and asked for the full sized 20 gauge in the gun cabinet.
I said if you give me the little one, so we agreed and we traded it for the 30-30.

Congrats on your purchase, I saw one locally at a gun show recently and was interested but passed due to price. I'd like to hear more about yours when you shoot it, let us know what you like and dislike. My son and I each have 1981 Marlin 336's, a pistol grip and a Texan, love shooting those.

I remember when this model was first introduced with attractive price of $99.99. But this was 40 years back when gas was 32 cents per gallon.

Years ago, SHOOTING TIMES had a feature article on 30-30 rifles. they tested each one with various ammo and bullet weights. Savage 170 produced exceptionally tight groups with all ammo tested. Explanation was free floated barrel and precision head spacing.

The 170 faded and eventually was dropped from production. But in my opinion, an accurate and fast handling 30-30 is a KEEPER.

Good hunting to you.

good news

T.R. that's good news, I seem to be attracted to oddballs, it is in great shape,
& the fella I got it from said he has taken several deer with it, and it's a proven performer.
I loaded up some ammo today and should get out this weekend!
I'll post an update!

the 170,s were built on the savage 410 shotgun frame,s, they were not the best . they developed feeding problems and the extractor ,s were two piece and would break off. i owned three of them, and they all had thoses problems over time. eastbank.

eastbank, so you had three, does that mean you liked the platform? how long did they last before problems occured? This one seems shot very little and is in great shape. I need to find a scope mount for it.

the ones i had came in deals with other guns and were thrown in to sweeten the deal.i dumped them as a gunsmith friend told me the problems that reared there ugly heads with them in use,as he had repaired quite a few and kept extra extractors on hand. i hope yours holds up,a 760 remington scope base may work. good luck eastbank.

Jim Carmichael tested a pile of rifles and the 170 came out as the most consistently accurate. As mentioned it has some issues.

model 170

Well I shot it today, after some sight in fouling shots(2 groups circled)@ 50 yards. Bullets are all over the place. I shot at 100 yards and couldn't even hit a 24"x24" target board. I was shooting off hand with a sling. Load was 28 grns of IMR4198 with 150grn Sierra pro hunter RN @ 2230 fps. I must say I am disapointed, feeding issues as well.
I will go back to the drawing board and try another load, probably RE-7 or H-335.
POA for the M170 is a six o'clock hold on the upper left dot, upper right dot is my 1932 Oviedo Spanish Mauser in 7x57 8 shots with standard (horrible) military iron sights.
A real fun gun to shoot. It was 85-90 degrees in western Washington today. Almost too hot to shoot ! Almost!
