Out riding around in the old stomping grounds yesterday and swung by my favored shop for a minute. While browsing I came across a Savage 170 in 30-30. I havent seen too many pumps in that caliber and now its on my mind. Any one out there have one and can shed some light on them? Bore looked good, finish was around 85% with some dings in the stock. I'm thinking it would make a near perfect hunting rig here in FL.

I don't have any experience with that particular model...

...but like many others I'm sure, it would be nice to know what the asking price is (was, in the event that you have missed it already).

Sounds like a good deal, especially if a pump .30-30 garners this level of interest from you.

I'd take a couple of dummy rounds and ask to cycle them if possible. If everything checks out, I'd go ahead and make the purchase.

Don't wait too long, though. Every gun I ever thought twice about like you're doing has been gone when I went back to the shop.

30-30 was plagued with feeding problems, although I had one in 35 Remington that wotked like a charm. It was very accurate, too. Can't speak to pricing these days, but I personally would not pay 300 bucks for one.

I had one for a while. It fed and functioned very well. It would punch two inch groups with Rem. 170 gr loads. The single action bar made the fore end rattle which isn't a good feature on a hunting rifle.

Jim Carmichael tested a stack of guns for his book on rifles and the 170 was the most consistently accurate with 2 1/2 moa. This was up against all action types, some costing three times as much as the Savage.

I sometimes wish I still had it.
