Can anyone tell me the difference between the two offerings Savage makes in .17 Mach 2? They have the Mark II and the 17 series. Not sure what the difference is. I'm looking for a "GP" - general purpose - .17, and from what I read, the Savage is a good shooter, and the Mach 2 is a little less expensive than the HMR.

Thanks,
Q

you will be very happy with savage' .17 models. i have there lowest model, bought from dicks brand new 2 years ago for $170. ill see what i can find on your question tomarrow.

mach 2 is better, funner, quieter, less recoil, and less expensive than a 17hmr. it also lets you shoot 17Aguilas, which is super cool. however , you get about 60 yds more trajectory with the hmr over the mach 2. a 100 yd zero, with the mach 2 will let you hold dead on, out to about 130 yds, on small game and pdogs.
the hmr will let you do the same thing on game out to 150 to even 175 yds.
but remember the 17 hmr is about 14 bucks a box now, mach 2 ammo is about 5 to 7 dollars a box now. Ammotogo.com will sell you a brick of Eley mach 2 ammo for about 4 bucks per box.

I have a savage 17hmr stainless with thumbhole stock. Its a goodlooking gun and is a tack driver at 100yds. I believe the popularity of the hmr will make this cartrigde withstand the test of time. I don't know about the Mach2 because never have shot one. A rimfire thats flat at a 100yds is awesome. I do know that brass I see at the range is 3 to 1 in favor of hmr. Good luck with your decision.

a 17 aggie is a true 22lr cart necked down, whereas the mach 2 is really a 22stinger cart. the 17 aggie is also a 20 grain fmj bt bullet, so the bullet sticks out a bit more, and goes about 1900 fps from the muzzle. It is great if you dont' want to explode small game, or keep meat, or makes a very small exit hole, especially if you wanna keep fur such as fox.
