:rolleyes:I have recently bought a Savage 111 in a 7mm Rem Mag with synthetic stock and bushnell scope already mounted ready to go for our upcoming deer season. It seemed to be really light (typical of a synthetic stock) right out of the box. I removed the recoil pad and put 2.5 lbs of lead shot inside the buttstock (vacuum sealed in a small bag so they wont rattle). I filled the rest of the stock with empty grocery bags packed in there tight so the bag of BB's wont move, then I replaced the recoil pad. It made a huge difference in the weight of the gun but I am wondering how it will affect my recoil? I havnt shot this gun yet but am going to the range this afternoon. Should be interesting. Any thoughts or opinions would be appreciated. Thanks!!!!

For bench shooting with a hunting rifle just fold up a towel and place between the butt/recoil pad and your shoulder. It does have a nice pad on it like a simms pad? Most guys when shooting at the deer or what ever thats real don't feel the recoil, maybe don't hear the blast. The wieght is going to add to the rifle for sure but it will make it out of balance.

dosent affect the balance really at all....some but not enough to make a difference...rifle shot well with less felt recoil than my g/f's 30-30.

2.5 pounds will help with actual recoil, but will make that a bugger if you're walk-up hunting, especially out West where climbing uphill all day is the norm....

Lighter is better when you're humping that rifle out hunting---get a better recoil pad for the bench---and lose the weight.

Another thing I thought of---not sure if it would be true in reality---that all that shot in the stock would give the effect of a dead blow hammer and compound the recoil instead of lessening it----just a thought.

i wouldn't mess with it, a 7mm mag doesnt feel that bad, does it?
i have shot .308 loads at 3000 fps with a 150 grain that werent too bad, then again, my whole setup is 10 lbs.
overall 165-180 grains kick far worse.

It has no more recoil than a 30-30. I shot 150 grain federals at 3400 fps and it was great!! I would recommend doing this if your rifle is light and kicks alot....as for the "dead blow hammer" comment.....maybe if the lead could move,YES....but it cant and it done a great job at killing the recoil. A friend of mine has a synthetic 30.06 and it kicks like a mule compered to my "leaded 7mm" lol

I'd be looking for a way to lose another 2.5 lbs instead of adding weight. Couldn't pay me to carry that sucker into the places I hunt.

My Howa weighs ten pounds. i plan on hunting with it, i also punch paper.
everyone tells me i shouldve gotten a fat barrel. then I let them handle the gun.
its heavy enough. haha

Well maybe you should have bought the heavy barrel model and got the balance, yea i know you said it did change but it did. And had a more stable shooting platform. I bought a ruger SS paddle stock when the first came out, shot like poop but was lite and the oll towel between shoulder and gun made it easy to shoot. now it carries a heavier barrel and wood stock at 10.5lbs and shoots like lite weight 243. Like i said before not many people feel the recoil while hunting. But it your shoulder thats carry'n it so nothing said matters.

I never notice recoil when hunting. The bench is another matter.

Since the weight is behind the barrel, I suggest you remove it when you go afield.

I have also found that synthetic stocks do a better job of soaking up recoil than wood. This observation is based on my Sako TRG (old style) in 300 Wea. Mag. With a 180 gr. factory load, it kicks less than my 35 Whelen.

Besides, a 7 mm mag should be on a par with a 30-06. But less than a 30-30? Give me a break...

I didnt say less than a 30-30 I said "NO MORE" than a 30-30...and until you shoot it yourself dont tell me how my rifle shoots...I posted my original question for honest opinions not for somebody's sarcasm.

my .308 shoots about like a .308
maybe close to 7-08
oh wait.... haha.
the recoil is not an issue with me, i like the tapered barrel, looks better to me. and the gun shoots fine.

Lots of simple ways to deal with recoil off the bench and like many have said hunters don't typicaly feel the recoil, some don't hear the shot. If your way works for you fine but you did ask for others input and seems all are honest opinions not sarcasm.
