Hi all. A big thank you up front for any one who comments.

I might be able to get my hands on a cheap barreled action savage 99 in rough shape. It should clean up nicely, and it has everything but the wood. I always wanted to build a 99 in 358 with some custom wood, but wasn't sure if savage lengthened the action for the 308 or not (this one is in 300 savage) ? I presume they didn't, but you know what happens when you get to assuming things.

I'll have it bored out to 358 from the 300 savage, and get a nice custom stock built for it. Should be a sweet little rifle.

Savage 99s were made in 358, just not very often. So, I know that action will handle the length.

What I didnt know is whether savage had a shorter action for the 300 savage, and a little longer one for the 308/358, or just a one-size-fits-all action?

I think it is the latter.

I believe the later .308/.358 Winchester chambered rifles were manufactured with longer magazines then the original .300 Savage models.

Great article by Chuck Hawks about the Savage 1899 at www.chuckhawks.com. There we see the .300 Savage and .358 Winchester are the same receiver length. The carrier may be different. You can easily check this by loading your .300 Savage receiver with the .358 Winchester cartridge. You don't have to close the action to do this.
