OK Folks,
I have an older Savage-Fox Model B. It has set for years and not been fired. So I took it out today and tried to fire it and nothing doing. With a fresh box of 16s to fire, well it would not open up enough to allow for the shells to be inserted. The action is nice and tight when closed and it opens readily with the lever. But when the barrels fold down they don't go down fully. I took the forearm off and then the barrels. If I shake the stock and receiver I can hear something inside "clink" around. I have not taken the receiver off of the stock as of yet. Ideas? Thanks everyone, and Merry Christmas!!!

Probably set so long the old grease, oil and dirt turned into cement.

First thing I would do is take all the wood off, and give it a good cleaning with Gun-Scrubber, WD-40, or brake cleaner, and a toothbrush.

Then, blow out with compressed air and spray lube with Rem-Oil.
Then blow out again.
What oil is left is 'just right'!

Then, if it is new enough to have ejectors instead of extractors??

Make sure the cocking sears & springs on the ejectors are cocked & locked before putting the forearm iron back on.

RC,
Thanks for the reply and suggestions so quickly! I am good with taking the stock off, just don't want a bunch of pins and springs zinging out of it!!!
Appreciate it!

Nothing should fly out at you if you just take the stock and forearm wood off to get to the gunk and look things over.

If you decide to take the butt stock off, you will need to first take off the buttplate (or recoil pad), then use a long screwdriver to take out the stock bolt, after which you can pull the stock to the rear and off.

Thanks RC and Jim,
Ok, here is the update: I took the stock off, no problemo! The receiver slid right off. I happened onto this B out of default several years ago, and since it was the only 16 ga I had, I just never got around to firing it. Well that was then and this is now.... so when I took the receiver off the two hammers and sears fell out in my hand. There is a pin towards the back of the main housing that has nothing on it, however there is a U shaped spring infront of it that is loose. I am guessing that the previous owner had the gun apart at some point and put it back together not knowing what he was doing. All the parts look to be in good shape, with no chipped edges and such. So, I think I will try to find a schematic and reassemble all the parts. Thoughts, suggestions, all are welcome...

Another example of an amateur "gunsmith" dumping his mistakes on someone else. Believe me, Raven, you are not the first, nor will you be the last. Good luck.

Hey, would anyone happen to have a picture of this lockwork? Being able to see it in some detail would go a long, long way to my reassembly efforts.
Thanks,
Rowdy

Hey Guys, still working on the Model B here. I got the hammers reinstalled and put the sear levers in. The lever on the right was bent out to the right and would not line up with the trigger. So I straightened it a bit and it went right in. Rest of the assembly went well... except that the right hammer is not staying back after the action is opened. The left side works like a charm, but not the right. I checked the hammer and sear lever before putting it together and there were no chips or burrs. Any ideas on how to make my single action double barrell again???

The most obvious causes are that the sear spring doesn't engage the sear on the right side or that the sear itself is binding. A binding trigger can also cause that problem. The stock can be a problem when fitting a new one, but not normally with a stock that has been on the gun.

Reason parts fell out in your hand was previous owner knocked the hammer pin out and then did not have a clue as to how to recompress the mainsprings to reinstall the hammer pin. Also I did not see you mention the mainsprings. Were they still there or missing?

Hey Folks,

Well, worked on the Model B some more... and ... suprise, surprise, surprise!
She's locking back both hammers now and working like a charm!!! I appreciate your alls help here, now to go shoot this thing!
