So I've decided on a savage in 308, I've been looking at the fcp-sr, fcp-k and the fcp-hs precision. I've been looking online at the stocks available and really like the b&c medalist style 5. So I guess my question is do I buy a model with a junk stock and buy the b&c, try to find an action only (if so where?) or buy the hs precision model. I like the k model for the price and muzzle brake and I like the sr for the detachable mag, but both can be added.

Thanks for the help
Jason

I'm currently building a similar project. I am starting with an old pre-accutrigger 110 LA in 30-06 and basically just using the action. I've got a Shilen barrel on order, and still have to decide which stock (leaning towards Choate). I'm building a 600 yard rifle and have a budget of $2000 including glass.

I have a B&C (aftermarket) on my 110 30.06 and without a doubt the H-S on my 12 LRPV is a better stock. But it costs more and the company has some well known baggage. I won't go into that but you might want to look for the info.

Thanks guys for the info, Jackal I'm still trying to get adjusted to this ipad, it wants to autocorrect everything lol

They don't offer the 308 in LRP, but I've heard that you can get one chambered in 308 for a bout $200 more.. I shot a friends 12LRP in 6.5 CM with the HS Precision stock and it was like driving a Cadillac... He had a Vortex PST 6x24-50 on it.. 2 liter bottles at 550 yards (max distance we had) was like a walk in the park... I really saw the difference between a stock rifle with okay optics and a really nice heavy rifle with GREAT optics... The difference is HUGE...

They used to offer the .308 in the LRPV but the Target model 12's (12 Benchrest and 12 F/TR) are pretty much the same rifle but with longer barrels. Many people like the shorter 26" barrels though because they aren't as front heavy. Look for the target action to get the best shooters. That action alone costs about $500 though so any rifle that has it won't be cheap.

Cowtownup, you just described my rifle and my recent expirience!
I have always shot a little long range with a 30-06, 270, or 308 and a standard scope, but I got a 6.5CM Lrp with a 6-24x50 Vortex PST and carried it to my cousins hay field which stretches to 550. I shot a 100 on a 1/2" sticky dot. I shot at 200 about a1/4" from the sticky dot. I shot a 8" steel target at 300. I shot the 8" target at 400.
I shot the 8" target at 500. I moved it into the woods to get 550 and missed twice, but adjusted my windage a little and hit it 4 times. I could not believe the difference between my old 308 and this rifle. You are right, it is a cadillac of rifles. I am looking for a longer field! All shots were doped per "bullet drop" on iphone and wind was guessed but was really at or above 10 mph. Its definitely a keeper. I may sell my old 308!

It all depends on the range you are talking about. If you are talking out to 600 yards or so any of the stocks or barrels already mentioned will serve you equally well especially if it is well fitted and glass bedded. Find one you like that fits you and your pocketbook and go for it. I have a B&C Duramax on my pre-Accutrigger 110. I have no doubt when I put a new barrel on it 600 yards will be no problem just pillar bedded. I used to have a Savage FCPK and it was insanely accurate with my reloads. I traded it off because I didn't like the Accutrigger on it but honestly I should have kept it and replaced the trigger.

BTW, if you don't reload and you want to shoot long range you are really selling yourself short. Building the right load for your weapon is really the key. My FCPK would shoot under an inch at 100 with factory loads but when I used the load I tailored for the gun it would practically shoot them through the same hole. 600 yards didn't seem that far away with that gun.
