I saw this rifle a few days ago and now i think i really want one. My brothers seem to think that my other .22s are theirs so i want something to call my own. Plus it has the accutrigger which is cool. It's supposed to be accurate and relatively cheap. I have a few questions though. The MSRP is around $190 but usually guns don't go for that price. What is the most common price that these things go for? Also, does the synthetic stock on these feel cheap? I know theres a lot of synthetic stocks that have seams running down the middle which feel cheap. Thanks for any input and pics would be nice.

I managed to get a lemon Mark II myself.
Its accurate when its actually firing and has a horrible time extracting the casing....it has a hard time even extracting an unfired one.

I've got one in 17HM2 and it drives tacks.

Mossberg535, have you contacted SavageArms about your lemon? I imagine if you explained your problem to them, they'd fix it for you for little (shipping) to nothing.

I bought a Mark IIF, older model without accutrigger at Walmart a few months ago for $114. It doesn't feel cheap at all, the trigger is quite good and the accuracy is far above what I would have expected.

Here are mine, top one is a 17HMR bottom one is a MK-II in 17 Mach2. they are pre-accutrigger models, so I put in a RifleBasix sear piece in each. On the MK-II the trigger breaks like glass at approx one pound of pull and it will put those tiny 17cal pills into a single small ragged hole at 50 yards. At 100 yards it is an inch and a half or less(sometimes much less)shooter with every ammo I have tried. Being these are both pre-accutrigger I wouldn't compare prices. The factory synthetic stocks are OK and you'll never have to worry about water damage or scratches but I find them rather flimsy. Personally I feel both these rifles were a great value and amazing accurate and IIRC I paid about 130 or so for the MK-II.

I have one in .17m2 without the accu-trigger. It was a search to find a lefty. I have yet to shoot a new or old Savage rimfire bolt action that wasn't accurate. I haven't had any issues with mine. Mine has the heavy barrel and don't have any problems carrying it through the woods after squirrels. I would say buy it.

I have a Mark II in .22lr... LOVE IT. I've had it for 5-6 years and it's been flawless. You'll enjoy it.

Mine is extremely accurate (all I've done is 25 yards though). The best group I've gotten was a one hole group. It literally looked like a single shot with two very small bumps on the end. The stock feels kinda cheap though.

Not yet.
Im going to call them and see just about getting a new bolt since it seems to be the entire problem.
a lot of misfires end up not even having a mark on them at all from the firing pin...Im wondering if its got enough clearance or maybe even just a bit short.

I have a Mark IIGL (left handed version). It's very accurate with CCI Subsonic HPs -- it'll group under a nickel at 50 yards. Mine is pre-AccuTrigger so I put a Rifle Basix sear in it, which brought the trigger down to an acceptable level.

The chamber is tight. After 50 rounds or so of waxy ammo, it will have problems extracting live rounds, though empty cases come out just fine. A quick swab with a Q-Tip dipped in solvent fixes that.

I wish that were the only problem. The misfires are a pain in the *** and they happen regardless of what type of ammo we buy.
I read a few reviews around and it does seem to be rare, so Im guessing that maybe we just managed to buy one that has a problem.
Though I not sure if I really want to dump any money into it just to find out that it still isnt fixed since its a cheap $150 gun (scope was included in that price too)

i won mine at a Friends of NRA banquet on a $10.00 raffle ticket. It was in 99 or 00 I don't remember, has the laminated stock and polished aluminum rings, beautiful rifle, feels and shoots like a full sized centerfire. Love it even though it is pre accu-trigger.

I like mine, and it is very accurate for the price and the Crapco 4X scope on it, but when it gets very hot it tends to fail to extract. It's a rare occurence, and I've put many bricks through the gun, but it does happen.

ETA: I have a 93R17, however, that is absolutely flawless.

had one with pencil bbl, in mach 2, a rare combo, did the trigger trick at the top of the savage string over on rimfirecentral, for non accutriggers, improved a ton. But I had 5 mach 2's at the time, and I sold this one. Never shoulda done that...should have kept it for field use, since it was accurate, short bbl'd, and light, with a synth stock.

Sounds like a combination of two problems:
i. Failure to extract is often caused by the black spring clip (on the bolt) being stretched a little wider than it should be. Also check that the left hand extractor is the silver one with the slightly rounded end, while the right hand one is black with a sharp claw.

ii. Misfires can be due to the "top hat" at the rear of the striker rubbing on the stock. It may only be contacting the stock ever so slightly, but if so, it slows down the striker just enough to cause light primer strikes. The other possibility is that the firing pin is either gummed up, burred or just plain broken.

You'll find a heap of advice and people willing to work through your problems over in the Savage forum on rimfirecentral.com. Of course, you could just call Savage and send the rifle in for service...

that price may be a bit hi, but not by much. also, Savage is notorious for using bubble gum , chocolate bars, and black tape, blended, to make their stocks. Ignore.

I bought my Savage MarkII GVXP at Dicks last year for under $250 ( if I remember correctly , might have been $209 ). It has a crap Simmons 8 point scope on it that I replaced after one range trip.

I probably have 2K rounds thru it or so. Shoots nice , mostly shot at 50-75 yards when I take the kids with me ( leave the 8mm , 303 and 308 at home so as not to make the jump ).

Nice little bolt gun , I am quite happy with it , and am looking to get a second one for my son , since he prefers the bolt gun over his 10/22.

I've got a MKII JTV (laminated thumbhole stock, varmint barrel) and really love it. It's an accurate, cheap .22lr. My only complaint about the rifle is that it occasionally will fail to eject a spent casing, leaving it floating around loose in the action, which is a pain to fish out with my blunt fingertips. I usually have to dump the magazine to get it out.

@Mossberg535:

I've had failure to fire problems with mine, but only when I don't fully and firmly push the bolt lever ALL THE WAY DOWN, until it stops. If the bolt is not solidly closed, it will fail to fire, almost every time. Methodical experiment confirmed this (for my rifle).
