I have the urge to get a .223 bolt action. I have a 16" Colt AR and have lots of .223 lying around. My gundealer has a used model 10 with a heavy barrel that looks to be in good shape. I haven't looked down the barrel or anything, but it looks and feels solid. That one is $395 with rings attached, but no scope. OR he can order me the model 12, with the non-heavy barrel. That one comes with a 3X9 Simmons scope and sling, for $489. Is the used model 10 a better deal than the new model 12. Both have the accutrigger.

If I were looking at this deal, I think I'd get the used Model 10 and spend the remaining $100 (preferably less) on a scope I'd choose which might be a Simmons 3-9x40 which can be had for less than the difference between the two rifles in question. That's assuming the used Model 10 is in good shape, but I've bought used guns that were mechanically sound... and they shoot real good... but looked a little rough.

If you plan to walk a lot, get the lighter rifle. If it's for shooting at the range, or shooting from a fixed position, a heavy rifle would serve you just as well. Personally, I'd say other than that, the two rifles are a wash -- and the Simmons scope certainly isn't worth the extra $90.
