I have been looking for a new varmit rig for awhile now and the Savage Model 10XP Predator has caught my eye. I've been looking into the package deal in 223. I have never owned a Savage and am qurious if anyone here has any experience with this rifle. I have gone to variuos gun shops and handled the gun and played with it as much as one can from the other side of the counter. I like the price range of the Savage's and from what I've read they are good guns. My question is what are the opinoins of those who own savage's, specifically this model, and what else compares to this model as far as handling, shooting, and value. Thanks for all your insight.

It's a new model so maybe not many owners yet, however all the tests I've seen showed it had typical Savage accuracy. That means good. It's really the same as some of the other model 1o's, just a mid weight barrel and fancy paint so I would expect it to be as good as any. I just bought a 12 FV a couple of weeks ago and am very impressed with it so far.

From my reading it is a very high quality varmint rig.

Their is a write up about it on Gunblast.com, also check out predatormasters.com for a few reviews as well.

I'd have to say it is one of the guns that I am looking at for next year.

Well, I had the model 11 fxp in 243, black synthetic, and it was a wonderful , light , handy rifle. quite accurate as well, you would not be sorry getting one of those.

I'm thinking either a .204 Ruger or a .223 would make a great walking around varmint rig.

What scope and rings would match?

You can order this gun with a scope and rings that is in the same camo pattern and bore sighted at the factory. The scope is a Simmons 4x12x40mm. I know that that isn't the best scope, but for what I'm looking for it will be just fine. A guy can always upgrade at a later date and time. The Sportsman Warehouse here quoted me a price of around $670 dollars for the package model. I just might have to pony up the money and own one. Thanks for all the info.

I just picked one up yesterday, topped it with a 6-24x44. I'm heading out in the morning to sight it in and see what kind of accuracy i can get out of it. From what I hear the Savages are very accurate out of the box, and the AccuTrigger seems to be really nice.

Savage is one of the most accurate production rifles on the market. Mine is chambered in .338 win.mag. I routinely fire 2" groups at 200 yds. with it,and hit my furthest shot ever on an Elk 2yrs ago at 350 yds. I can afford a Weatherby but why waste the money when you can get this kind of accuracy from a production rifle, then you can spend your money on a really nice Leupold scope

Probably save a lot of money by getting the same gun un-camoed, and doing it yourself with a can of Fusion. Performance wise, it's just a regular Savage.

It's not just a normal Savage though. It has a 22" barrel in medium contour (Model 12's have a 26" bull, model 110 have a 22" sporter weight). I really like the medium contour, it allows for a much more controlled shot off-hand, yet is accurate like you get with a bull barrel. Walking around with a 26" bull barrel is tough work, it's much easier to lug around a 22". It's a compromise that I really like.

"...It's not just a normal Savage..." Yeah it is. Same receiver as the 10. Just a heavier barrel. You're paying more for the finish. It's very hard to beat any Savage for accuracy out of the box though.
"...What scope and rings would match?..." Go to the Savage site, into the model page and click on 'scope mounts'.

Well.........I'd still buy a cheaper one, and if I was that concerned, I'd get a Shilen match barrel in medium contour, and take 15 minutes to put it on. Then camo it myself with Fusion.

you may also want to look into the Howa varmint rig, a very nice deal.
especially the varminter supreme, and the axiom series.
