Has anyone gotten their hands on one of these? If so I have a few questions. How is the accuracy? Especially the .22. I read that the plastic extractor was a prototype. Did they put a metal extractor on it? If not how tough is the plastic one? Is it easy to take down? I know that it is less than pretty but I'm interested in the concept.
Thanks.

Haven't handled one personally. Most reviews I have seen or heard say the .22 is just as accurate as any stand alone rifle. The .410 is accurate to 20-30 yards. Haven't heard about the extractor being plastic or metal. Anyone I know who has one says it is just as easy to flick out the empties with a fingernail. I haven't seen anyone take out the pin between the upper and lower so I am not sure if it comes apart there. The screw they use between them looks like it needs an Allen wrench.

Savage Model 42 Feels Solid

I handled one at a gun store today and I was impressed with the quality.

The pivot point between the action and barrels is held by hex screws (one on the left side and one on the right side). This takedown feature seems to be the major weakness of the Model 42; I would have preferred something quicker--simpler so that you could transport action-stock and barrel in a short case and quickly get both parts together for a hasty shot.

Overall I like the model 42's low weight, compactness, plastic stock, and quality recoil pad.

Wife has been trying to find a survival type rifle but hates the Savage 42 or the older Savage 24. She decided she really likes the Springfield M6 which is insanely much harder to find. 3 Gun shows and 12 gun stores later.

We keep our eye on online listings but have never bought from an online listing. Namely since FFL fees of all the local shops were at least $50. Not a completely forbidden idea but she is picky with her firearms and likes to hold it before she buys it.

The Model 42 is NOT designed as a take down gun.
Removing the screws will void the warranty.
The extractor is indeed of a polymer composition, it functions just fine.
Most .410 hulls and .22 empties will simply fall free if you upend the gun.
The .22 barrel is sufficiently accurate, I get 2" groups at 50 yards with a variety of .22 ammo. Closer you shoot, the tighter the groups.
The .410 barrel is very slightly choked, 3" chambered and shoots any kind of .410 shell including slugs very well.
I would say the maximum effective range for the shot barrel is 30 yards.
The shot barrel shoots 2" lower than the .22 at 25 yards.
I learned to put the front sight in the rear sight notch for the .22 barrel and to set the bead just above the rear sight blade for the shot barrel.
Standard velocity .22s shoot lower than high velocity, this is corrected by aiming bottom of bull/target for high velocity and spot on for standard velocity shells.
I had to adjust the rear sight for windage and elevation to get everything dialed in.
