I took my savage 11 in .308 out today to do a little shooting, don't have access to any ranges so I shoot in my backyard. Range of 25 yards, best I can do and still ensure that the rounds wont go into the neighbors back 40, he's an outdoorsman too so I never know if someone is out there. anyways my savage is all stock, factory stock and scope, I plan on replacing both and the rings when i finally get some money. shooting off a harris bipod I had a .5 inch group with 4 shots, 5th one being a flier.

my question is, I know that a one inch group at 100 yards becomes 2 inches at 200 yards and so on, does a .5 inch group at 25 yards become 2 inches at 100 yards? I know I was shooting wrong, I had the but stock against my shoulder, as apposed to the pocket, so I think with a change in my form and a good stock and optics I can turn this gun into a tack driver, my goal is to have it be a .75 moa consistantly after 50 rounds after I get it upgraded.

What type of rest were you using? How were you measuring your groups? Some rifles shoot better at 200 yards than 100. The bullets may stabilize a bit more towards 100 yards. What is your scope setup, and what ammo were you shooting? I really doubt if your Savage would do a 2" 100 yard group, but it may very well be so.

Yes, a .5" group at 25 yards becomes 2" @ 100 yards.

The question is, what ammo were you using and did you shoot from a bench/table or from the prone position? Bipods are not meant to be fired from a bench and this will definately effect your accuracy.

ALso, the ammo could be a question mark. What were you using?

CZ is also correct that distance from muzzle to target and twist rate can effect stabalization of the bullet. Too many factors to properly diagnose without more details.

Find a place that has 100 meters/yards. Are there ANY forest service ranges in your area? It may cost $5.00 to shoot for the day, but well worth it to determine som eof these issues.

the ammo was some old remington soft points the heaviest remington makes. A friend gave me half a box of them, he doesn't have a .308 anymore so I got the ammo, I'm not to concerned about the grouping seeing how the stock and scope are cheapos, I just was looking for a baseline result for a before and after type review for when I fix up the gun. I was using a bench rest that I got from cabellas, it has a bubble level in it but the name of it slips my mind. I also used the bipod, both from the prone, wasn't about to drag the picinic table around the house to shoot from. once the weather gets better I plan on going over to my friends house and shooting in his back yard, then I'll be able to test it out to about 350 yards, 400 if I don't mind shooting into the treeline. one good point of intrest though, when I went from 3X to 9X poa to poi didn't change at all, although I'll still test that again at the longer ranges just to be positive.
