Does anyone kow if there are any police organizations who use savage model 10s for actual tactical shooting? Iwas wondering what percentage of the swat market they actually had if anyone knew. Most people seem to have the opinion that if it isn't a winchester or remington it is junk. I know the rifles have their proponents but I was wondering if they actually do any field work.

Thanks!

a hundred or so officer dept. north of me bought three several years ago and all three went to sniper school and all three broke before the class ended. a ofc. work with had one for two years or so and never had any problems with his ,after he had the very gritty trigger worked on. hope this helps.

I personally know of two who appeared at Blackwater w/ Savages, and shot well.

I am not a serving LEO. I do have a 110 FP Tactical. Tasco SS 10x42 MilDot, Choate (yeah, it IS butt-ugly), VersaPod. Rifle shoots 1/2-MOA or better all the time. Best is 3x group at 100 measured 3/8" x 0.451". Used GA Arms 168gr Sierra MK at 2600 fps. At 300y, this same load shot 1"x2" on the same day. The trigger is lousy, but comfortable like an old shoe now. Mayhaps I'll get a SS trigger, mayhaps not.

I have also shot this rifle recently at 1000m using 168 SMK and NATO-spec 172gr. Able to keep all rounds on a 3'x3' target. As I said, I'm no professional, but the rifle certainly has the capabilities to deliver.

My rifle is now 5 y/o, and has 750 documented rounds through it. I was on hiatus for a couple of years, but have fired over 150 rounds this year. It seems to improve w/ age (barrel patched, not scrubbed). No failures/breaks, but DO watch carefully when you remove that extractor for cleaning!

Again, I'm not an LEO/professional Tac-Shooter. YMMV.

sam3, do you have any details on what 'broke' on them?

I've generally thought of the Savages as pretty tough, if not very refined rifles.

no sorry i don't i was told about them from our drug task force guy who was told by the other dept's task force guy. i do know they use rem. now.
we have a parttime smith here in town who loves savage rifles to death , he thinks they are a great buy over everything else.
the local sheriff's dept. has a savage it went thru sniper school last year just fine. hope this add. info helps.

I've tried my damndest to break a Savage with no luck. I don't doubt that Cops could break theirs, but I don't think they are any more or less likely to 'break' than the Remingtons.

As for accuracy, The Savage is every bit as accurate in my opinion, but I'd rather have a Remington as a duty weapon. The reason I own one (actually two) is because they are cheap for what accuracy potential they have and I, myself am cheap... :)

Just a thought

if the three Savage rifles in question (that broke at school) were somehow sequential Ser#'s or from the same day/basic batch (whatever you want to call it) it is entirely possible that all three suffered a case of "friday-gun-itis", the QC person was having a BAD day, or if the same PART broke on each then it could have been THAT batch that went bad.

just musing, and putting the thought out there.....

another thought

we are hearing about broken savages from someone who heard it from someone who heard it from someone who...

I would put alot more stock in "My savage broke" but nobody has said that yet.

yet another thought...

"Well if we can break these maybe we'll get remingtons just like..."

What's worse is that my Savage 10FP LE1 just arrived yesterday and I can't make it to the shop until tomorrow.

i thought from the start i should have made it clear that i heard it from someone who was told about them from someone else and that the savages i have personel experiance with worked fine.
hope this clears up any confusion.

We have used two for the last 10 years or so, both have had the triggers replace, and had the acton smooth up and thats it. For the ranges that a Police sniper will work in the Savage with a little tune up will work. The Remingtons are the premere slug thrower, but the new FN built useing the Win70 type of action is beganing to show up more in smaller departments, cost wise it appears to follow along Savage, FN{or copies} and then the Remington

I have 2 savages; a 10FPXP-LE, and a 12FV. Both are sub 3/4 MOA shooters and rock solid. I do a lot of long range shooting, including tactical matches and varmit matches, and the savages are just as solid as the Remingtons and the Winchester I own. Having said that, I prefer the Remingtons at this point as they seem to be easier to "grow" than a Savage. More people make hop up parts and work on them. My Savages are basically stock with a trigger job and that's about it.
