I had some time at lunch so I stopped by my local gunstore just to see what was new and I saw a Mak. I have not seen very many of these popular pistols and this is the first Bulg Mak I have seen, the others were Russian.

They wanted $199 plus tax and they were firm on there price. It was the common surplus Bulg Mak that is common right now. They claimed it was "new" and even put a yellow tag on it (yellow is new and white is used at this store). I am not sure they can really claim it is new, as far as I understand, they are surplus. Can a surplus gun be sold as new? I think I will pass. There is a gunshow comming up in about a month that may have a better deal.

Let me say that the Bulg Mak was much nicer than the two Russian Maks I have seen. It was finished a little nicer and the trigger was miles better than the Russian Maks I have felt. I am judging this from a grand total of three Maks so take that for what it is worth.

I also don't think Maks should cost $200! What is the most you would pay for a good Bulg Mak? Considering that it uses an oddball ammo and is made rather crudely, I think they should sell for less than $150. I can buy S&W 36s for around $200 and there are many good medium sized 9mms and .380 that can be had for around $200 so why pay almost as much for a Mak? What am I missing? I want to pick one up just to see why it has this cult following but there is no way I am paying $200 for one! I will be buying some more Stars and S&Ws before I even think about getting a Mak at that price.

Local dealer hear has one for 199 too

The reason there is a cult of the mak is that they are real accurate and real reliable as well as durable. And most got them back when they cost $110 bucks a piece.

Cheap ammo is a plus too. I tend to agree though that @ 200 they are a little much. I don't like some of the features of these guns and lots of people spend quite a bit to overcome these things. I would almost rather spend 3-400 and get something that has a frame mounted safety.

Of course, I'm still tempted to buy one because I can resist anything but temptation.

The shop probably has it listed for $200 because someone out there is willing to pay that much. Too be honest part of the appeal was the price when I purchased mine. Now that I have one and know how reliable and accurate it is, I would have paid more. The Mak is the first firearm that made me understand why people would purchase more than one of any giving model. I paid $150 out the door for a bulgy, I wish I bought two. It is the favorite gun to shoot (and cheapest) by both the guys and gals I frequent the range with.

worth $200-
-yes
should you pay that much?-
-shouldnt have to
get them now while you can for less, im sure once they are gone $200 will be a good price
then again russia might have another half a million of them wharehoused just for us:D

Firestar, Dude!,
Hows everything? I paid $189. for my flawless Bulgie Mak which included the soft black leather holster & cleaning rod. I saw another one a couple of days ago at a shop in Miami for $180. without a holster. It was basically perfect as well. The shop owner claimed it was new, just like your guy did. I guess it could be "new" surplus. He had another one that looked pretty rough. I picked up 1000 rounds of ammo from makarov.com for $140. that rocks.

I've let two of my buddies shoot the Mak and we all agree that it is an accurate shooter. It's easy to clean too. I'm sure I'll buy another one, one of these days. Peace bro.

Keys

Bulgaria is the only place they still made them new so it could be but you'll need to inspect it. $169 is more like it though.

I get Ram JHP for $50 per 500 at the shows and other brands for $5.50 a box.

It isn't gonna be "new", but it may be "un-issued". Un-issued often means never fired, so if thats the case it might be well worth the $200. Maks that have been fired are worth about $150. I dout that you'll find many Maks for less than $150. SOG sells them for $129, but it works out to be about $150 anyway because of shipping charges.

If this Mak your dealer has is really un-issued, I'd go for it. You won't be sorry, once you go Mak you don't go back ;)

As for ammo, you can find some pretty good deals. Here is an example:

If you reload, you can load Mak ammo for even cheaper. I just loaded up about 400 rounds. I can reload them for less than $0.05 a round if I use lead bullets.

$200 a little high

I paid $169 for mine at a gunshow in Austin, Tx and I thought that was a little high (came with 2 mags and a holster). Still even had a little cosmoline in it, but flawless blueing. It was the first autoloader pistol I have ever bought, and sets the mark high for others to follow. 300 rds later and ZERO malfunctions and no wear to the action. I shoot with a guy who has weapons that he has paid over $1000 for that he has to make excuses for like mag problems or should have cleaned the action, etc. Poor fellow.......

I got lucky and found a E. German Mak for $150 at a pawn shop. See my post about it HERE

Good deals are still out there.
