I had some time at lunch so I stopped by my local gunstore just to see what was new and I saw a Mak. I have not seen very many of these popular pistols and this is the first Bulg Mak I have seen, the others were Russian.
They wanted $199 plus tax and they were firm on there price. It was the common surplus Bulg Mak that is common right now. They claimed it was "new" and even put a yellow tag on it (yellow is new and white is used at this store). I am not sure they can really claim it is new, as far as I understand, they are surplus. Can a surplus gun be sold as new? I think I will pass. There is a gunshow comming up in about a month that may have a better deal.
Let me say that the Bulg Mak was much nicer than the two Russian Maks I have seen. It was finished a little nicer and the trigger was miles better than the Russian Maks I have felt. I am judging this from a grand total of three Maks so take that for what it is worth.
I also don't think Maks should cost $200! What is the most you would pay for a good Bulg Mak? Considering that it uses an oddball ammo and is made rather crudely, I think they should sell for less than $150. I can buy S&W 36s for around $200 and there are many good medium sized 9mms and .380 that can be had for around $200 so why pay almost as much for a Mak? What am I missing? I want to pick one up just to see why it has this cult following but there is no way I am paying $200 for one! I will be buying some more Stars and S&Ws before I even think about getting a Mak at that price.
