I saw an ad in a local paper for a S&W 500 4 inch for $750. Says its like brand new.

Is is a good price? Whats a new one going for?

Brion

That is nearly the dealer cost of a new one. The 'street' prices for new units runs ~$869 here. Go look at - ask for the brass he has for it. You'll likely find few empties - and nearly full box(es). You could offer $675 - but only if you want it. I am afraid that many original buyers, machismo driven or not, will tire quickly of this blaster. There simply isn't a wide range of ammo available. The .454 Alaskan SRH by Ruger will take .45 S&W, .45 Colt, and .454 Casull, so you have a 'level of enjoyment' choice. Good luck!

Stainz

Hey Stainz, I was going to ask if the gun was being offered with a partial box of 440 grain cartridges,,,, "Only shot five times,,,"

Check out Buds Gun Shop in KY web site. Their prices on new guns are nearly impossible to beat. That should give you a good reference point on prices.

Used gun... they are asking top price for a run of the mill street gun. I might go $600 as I would sell it.

Used S&W 500 4 inch for sale

With complete box of ammo missing one round. Gun is in great shape, slight flat spot on front sight, small stain on top of barrel, a little bit of forehead hair stuck in front sight. Negotiable.

Just shot the 8 inch barrel job, no problem

And yes they were the 440 Corbon full house jobs. Emptied the five, and could have fired several more cylinders no problem.

Fine gun, good egonomics, kicks as my 44 mag 3 inch barrel.
It's a keeper for sure! :D :D :D :D

George: I have never lived in California. I am 22-rimfire on all of the forums that I contribute to (with one exception). Your name is familiar though.

John

I looked at these carefully when it was looking like the Ruger Alaskans would never show up. It was just too big and heavy to comfortably carry all day. Heck of a handgun tho.

22-rimfire

John, there was a 22rimfire on the 1911 forum from Calf I talked with a lot thought you might be him. Thanks for the reply.

Two of my buddies own 8 3/8" .500s and one owns a 6 1/2" Preformance center gun.
I have shot both the long barrel versions and while I wouldn't want to shoot 200 rounds a session every week with the guns they weren't at all as nasty as some people would have the gullible believe.
440 Corbons are noticable make no reservations about that, 325 and 350 grain stuff is fairly pleasant, really the .50 Desert Eagle was a more uncomfortable gun to shoot, for me anyway.

I haven't shot the 6 1/2" PC .500 version yet, but my buddy says it is even more gentle in the hands because of the very good muzzle brake the PC installed and the heavy unfluted cylinder. He actually prefers it to the long barrel guns.

Still and all, a 4" barrel version of this particular gun is just plain stupid and condescending to the 'just gotta have' crowd.

Me thinks most of these 4" cannons won't have more than a hundred rounds shot through them in the lifetime of the proud owners,,,,,,,,,,

BAH! I try to shoot my 4" 500 at least 1 / month, 20-30 rounds. My highest round count is 40 rounds. I have to reload, the factory stuff is just too darn expensive.

My two fav. loads are
Hornady 500 gr. JFP 32 grains of h110 <- straight off of Hornady's PDF for the 500 ... I *think* 32.5 is their listed maximum and I'll just gently nudge towards that.

Hornady 350 gr. XTP/HP. H110, but I forgot the powder charge. Again, straight off of Hornady's PDF for 500 loads.

The recoil is stout, the muzzle blast... Impressive. I still haven't had a guest shooter drop it, get hit with it, etc. It's not _that bad_...

I have to agree with the Smurfslayer,
These hand cannons actually are nice shooters and once you shoot one you realize that.
I can't afford to buy tons of factory ammo, but they are very well designed and the recoil is nothing like I expected with the factory compensator.
It's a LOT more fun than shootin' my .22's.
If it was cheaper to shoot, it would go out for a walk a lot more often. :D

Like SMURFSLAYER, I shoot my 500 Mag at least once a month and of course i reload my own 40 or 50 rounds at a time. Like ONMILO stated the 440 carbon is a handfull in the 500 but the other loads are more plesent to shoot than my 50AE Desert Eagle. To each his own.

uh guys, I did say "most" of the owners wouldn't shoot more than a hundred rounds through the guns.
"Most" of the people who bought these thiongs don't bother to post on internet forums and are more likely to spend their free time showing their new toy to their buddies and promising to get out and shoot it "Just as soon as the weather gets better".

Count yourselves as exceptions to the rule and I certainly didn't mean to offend any serious shooters with my statement.

I still think the 4" version is stupid though, whadda ya gonna do, carry it in a Buscadero rig??!! :p

We're not arguing the fact about the "MOST owners" part of your comments, as much as we're somewhat offended on the fact that you keep referring to it as being STUPID over and over.

All guns do NOT have to be carried just to make sense.
There's a LOT of guys that OWN, LOVE, and USE/SHOOT the gun.
If S&W went to pruduction with it, I'm sure it made sense to them and was not a STUPID idea.

Hope that makes sense. I just think when you say something is "stupid" around here, there's going to be people that will stand and fight for that item.
That's all. :D

Jeff (GUNKWAZY)

STUPID! :fire: :fire: :fire:

Name 1 other production handgun that can actually ignite paper targets at 7 yards ! :uhoh:

Name one other production handgun that will cause your 'range lane neighbor' performing target work with an M1A to comment "H*ly **** that thing is loud" :neener:

Sure, the 500 4 inch isn't for everybody, but, to borrow a phrase from Harley Davidson "If you have to ask, you wouldn't understand"...

I may shoot mine this week now

You are right GUNKWAZY, it can't be stupid, S&W actually got people to buy a 4" cannon.
I still think its stupid, but hey, I ain't making money selling them either.
Then again I can't sleep well if I push a product that I consider stupid.
Guilty conscience I guess.

Yeah. A Scandium X-frame 357 10-shot. OH yeah. Now we're talkin' :).

Hey, for the hell of it, why not do a X-frame with three barrels stacked one on top of the other for three different "rings" of 22? :D How much you wanna bet we could see a 25-shot (or more!?) wheelgun?

:p

In 22mag with a 4" barrel it would be a damned interesting defense piece with practically no recoil at all...

For that matter, you could probably fit two "rings" of 32Mag...around...I dunno, 17 shots or so?

Still and all, a 4" barrel version of this particular gun is just plain stupid and condescending to the 'just gotta have' crowd.
I fired both on different occasions. Couldn't hit anything at 25 yards with the 8". Hit most shots with the 4". Didn't think the recoil was THAT bad. I'd much rather shoot the 4" .500 than the 9.5" .454.

On Dasher, On Dancer, OnMilo, On Stupid, but do you recall ?
The most Stuuuu-pid Revolver of all ?
The Smith and Wesson 4 inch hand cannon,
Had a very large X-frame,
They never let the hand cannon,
play in any revolver games,
then one foggy Christmas Eve,
Smith and Wesson came to say,
X-frame with your blast so bright, :what:
won't you scare everyone at the gun sight,
The shooters started to love him,
and they shot it out with glee, :D
You big bad A$$ Revolver,
You'll go down in History !!! :neener:

Jeff (GUNKWAZY)
Proud owner of the stupid 4 inch Hand Cannon !!!

Onmilo, if you don't like the 4 inch 500 Mag and feel you have nothing of value to add to a thread and think they are stupid, why did you even stop here to post your comments??? Other than being a troll. ;)

I have a 4inch 500 Mag and have well over 1000 rounds through it. I also have a 8 3/8 inch 500 Mag and the new 460 Mag. We all have our reasons for the choices we make, it is not concern to others what we choose to use. :neener:
