400 probably a fair price

DEAF,

I just bought a 4 inch, blue Service Six for @500.00. Mine is basically new in and still has the old red box that they came in.
From what I can see, since they do not come on the market very often, $400 is not a bad price as it is a sellers market, unlike used S&W'S.

I wanted to compare the Six series to the S&W model 15 I bought for $275.00 at a big dealer called SHOOTING STRAIGHT.

Oh, the cut off for RUGER with rubber grips is supposed to be 155 series. That is what is said on the HOGUE grip box I bought.

Good luck with the Six and model 15. I know the 15 is a great shooter, especially with the HOGUE grips.

Like Ruger SA - Never Developed an Effection for Their DA

I've owned a Ruger Single Six, original BearCat, and a Blackhawk Magnum. Really liked them.
Never went for their DA's, especially since my neighbor's DA busted.
Don't know the series or model. Mox nix (Es macht nichts)!

I might try them sometime. Just not excited about them now. If it were a really good deal, I'd probably jump.

To each his/her own. Don't mean to put down Ruger DA guys.

I really like S&W (first) and Colt (second) DA's, and some others.

Is that a 3-inch Speed Six? Looks mighty clean, sleek, and handy.
Yep, and an astounding action, too. Know how often it's been fired? Close your eyes -- what do you see? Yep, she's a virgin! I picked two of them years ago...cheap. No one wanted 'em because they were chambered for .38Spc. I had both of them reamed out to take .357 and (I'm sure I told you this story) the fellow who did it not only gave me a great price, he gave me exact measurements in the chamber throats. I've shot the OTHER and the accuracy was superb with JHPs, which is what they're sized for.

Now I totally agree with you on underlugged .357s. I don't even like 4 inch full underlugged revolvers.
Take a standard stainless 4-incher Security-Six sometimes and go to your local gun store. Put it side-by-side with a GP-100 boat anchor and just invite people to try both. That's something I'd like to see on YouTube!

Confederate

That is one sweet looking Speed Six! No need to ask if she has a sister because I already know she does. Either one would make for a great backwoods companion.

The real tragedy, sir, is that they broke the mold! Like bellbottoms, I'm sure one day sleek .357s will be back in style. (Okay, maybe not bellbottoms and Earth Shoes, but one day people will want 6-shot powerhouses that resemble the old S&W Model 10, rather than the excess steel we now have forced upon us.) In my old journalism course years ago, I was told, don't add to your writing until you can add no more; take away until you can't take away any more! Good advice for writing, great advice for Ruger and S&W. THAT blued Service-Six above days it all.

By the way, doesn't Deaf owe us some photos?

You are right Confederate, they just don't make 'em anymore. Rubber guns nowdays (and that is why I HATE rubber grips on a revolver) is what companies love to make. No doubt they make lots of money.

I can buy a rubber gun any day. I pack a Glock guys, good gun but it is still a rubber gun to me.

Wood and steel.. that's the deal.

Well I haven't made a bigger wheel yet but...

I'm going to have to photo all my "Six's" and make a bigger wheel, but that means taking A LOT out of my safe. Some of those guns I haven't seen for quite a while.

I don't currently have a Service Six, but adding one to the herd is on the list. Confederate, I have to respectfully disagree with you. I've never had a problem carrying either a 686 or a GP100 with a well-designed holster while hiking. The 6" models would probably get to be a little much, but I've found the full underlugs do a great job of holding the guns on target.
It's like religion, brother, you have to revel in the experience! Once you get a Service-Six you'll understand. If you can, try a stainless Security-Six with a 6-inch barrel. Carry it out in the great outdoors and see if you can feel the difference. I t think you will. And when you shoot it, I think you'll find that you don't need all that extra steel. The lighter gun can be shot off hand, true, but the gun's barrel can be rested on anything you can prop it against (which is probably what you'd want to do with the lugged barrels, too).

But different people like different guns. I'd just like shooters to have the choice. When I go into gun stores now, all the .357s are monsters. It was the celebrated shooter and law man Bill Jordan who talked S&W into releasing the popular Model 66. And the only reason they were discontinued was because of the frame battering and forcing cone issue, non-issues with the Ruger. Now they have the technology to re-issue the 66s made from new materials. But the shelves are all filled with underlugs now and there's no choice.

If you have a back deck with some shade, that's a great place to take photos. Do you have any longer barrels or do you just like snubs?

After hearing anti-gunners say snubs were only good for table top distances, I'd invite them to stand at a 100 yards away and see how useless they are. How about 125 yards? Is that tabletop distance? Never got any takers. Good thing, too, as I had NEW shooters busting clay pigeons at a hundred yards in no time.

Funny how they seem to know more about guns than those of us who shoot them!

Snub nose revolvers absolutely are good at *much* longer distances than most folks think. The mechanics all work the same. Pay attention to the fundamentals and you'll get strong hits. I think the issue a lot of folks who knock snubbies have is that with the short sight radius anything other than perfection will quickly show.
