It's Swiss and not American-made, but I suggest the Victorinox Farmer. Alox scales with a spearpoint blade, saw, can opener, awl, and flathead screwdriver. Hard to go wrong with a SAK for a boy's first knife.

That is just about impossible.

None of the old name knife makers that did stuff like that are still in business that I can think of. Those that still use the names import everything they sell.

A small Leatherman multi-tool might come closer then anything American made.

But a Victorinox SAK would sure be more pocket friendly.

Camillus made a 2 blade knife with a saw blade but good luck finding one. I have one of them I was "gifted" but don't even know how old it is or what it's worth.

I'm a big fan of the SAK One Hand Trekker knives. Based on their 111mm design, the blade locks, which I find much more useful for outdoors use. Comes in PE and serrated.

Too bad you can't find made in USA ones though.

I don't know what kind of boy he is or if it would be overkill, but the leatherman wave has both those tools and more. If he is a tinkerer or builder then he may like it or grow into it. I use mine everyday at work and love it.

There are some old American knives with saw blades, but they are hard to find.

A Swiss Army Knife would be the best way to go.

Another option might be a Leatherman.

Whatever you get him make sure the knife blade locks.
Kids by nature and immaturity are careless and if that sharp blade comes back at him during one of those careless moments it can be lasting.

Yup. And I have the scars to prove it.

You say "saw" blade. Does he want an actual saw blade or is he maybe thinking about a serrated knife blade? Just checking.
The Buck looks like the way to go with a real saw.

For my own use I would like to see one with a smooth edge blade and a serrated blade, none of this half and half stuff.

Whatever you get make sure the blade locks open for safety reasons. I would suggest taking the lad to a knife store and allowing him to pick the one he likes.

I did everything with my SAK when I was a kid. It's probably the right choice... and he's a little young to be developing xenophobic preferences towards consumer goods.

Re: the lack of locking blade, I did cut myself a number of times with mine. Never from it folding on me though. The "bone saw" saw blade was used quite a bit, always sawing off tree branches to make stuff.

Interesting that an 11-y/o would insist on made in USA. That's quite a prejudice.

WOW! an 11 year old that only wants american made knives?!? very impressive!

that buck knife that ugaarguy suggested looks to be just the ticket. i first got into buck knives when i was about 14 and i have been hooked ever since. very good knives and usually at reasonable prices to boot.

Thanks for all the input folks. I was hoping to stay under $50.00 but it looks like that's not in the cards. I'm leaning towards the Buck. The Bear& sons is one that I had never seen before.

How is it xenophobic for an American boy to want a U.S. made knife? He's had a cheap Chinese knives, a Turkish bayonet that he uses as a thrower and has spent more time with a south african made machete in his hand than most folks. He sees me go to work every day with a spyderco Pacific salt clipped in my pocket. Phobia is an unreasonable fear. He just wants a U.S. made knife.

I do hope he enjoys whatever knife you get him! I had a lot of fun when I was little, whittling sticks and cutting branches to make my own little outdoor shelters. I used a Victorinox SAK to do most of that, though I did briefly own a Buck when I was 10. Being 10, I lost it when it fell out of a pocket that had a hole in it while I was crawling through the mud.
