Saw (heard) an ND at the Austin gun show today

Sigh.

At least in this latest case the guy pointed in a safe direction before dropping the hammer. Gotta give him THAT much credit.

Whats with these people?

The way I learned it, you drop the magazine then pull the slide back and lock it open, then you visually check the chamber - you don't just eject a round?

Are people afraid to use that slide lock lever or what?
Where and with whom do these dufus' shoot to get away with such lousy firearms handling/safety?

So.........
How did ya feel after hearing a gunshot and realizing that you were completely unarmed and and unable to defend yourself{ or your loved ones} because you can not be trusted to keep your CHL gun concealed?
It should piss you off.

I was in the Bigtown gun in Mesquite, TX a couple of years ago when somebody let a round loose from an AR-15. At least 2,000 people in the room went amazingly quiet for a few seconds while everyone looked around to see if anyone had any holes in them. Nearly the same situation, round bounced off the floor and then through the ceiling, he was whisked away instantly.

Gun shows are one place I agree that all guns ought to be checked and be empty. There are just too many triggers that get pulled at the shows.

there is some notion that anti-gun types may be sneaking around loading display guns. Probably not but possible.

"you can not be trusted to keep your CHL gun concealed?"

The last ND at the Austin gunshow was by a guy checking a new holster for his carry gun. I think he only shot himself in the butt though.

Even in the military, even during live fire training, even on patrol of the DMZ in Korea, there were strict controls on ammo distribution. Lots of clickety click, slides working, actions moving, etc to have a bunch of loaded ones in the mix. Ahh, the irony. I still respect their decision.

I am curious about the Austin Police Department Officer at the front desk. What is the involvement of the APD with the gunshow? I assume they endorse it or condone it, but I'm curious as to who is paying that guys salary? (I wouldn't think it would be a private security thing as he's wearing the badge and in uniform?)

There are usually police at the front door putting ties around triggers. they are probably paid by the show sponsors. In texas, a police officer may do private security work without having to have a security guard commission.

It's pretty common around here for off-duty officers contracted to do security functions, for instance you'll see off-duty officers working security at hospitals, ect. The contract is usually negotiated by the officer's association, then filled by the members. I'm not sure if that's the case in the Saxet Gun and Knife show.

Reminds me of one time, I used to work the Great Southers Gun & Knife Show with PJ Army Surp. One morning it was real cold, show opened around 9 and around 9:20 BANG. Happened in the back corner, where not to many people had gotten around to. They had 2 guys and a dealer looking at a shotgun so they were the presumed "bg". So everyone was looking for some damage to the ceiling or where the shot went, noone could find anything so it was left at that. About 10 min later a dealer starte screaming, "the tire on my dolly blew" Apperently it was so cold outside and warm enough inside the tire went bang.

...I've gotten into the habit with my autopistols to peer down into the breech (after no magazine is in the pistol) as the action is open to double-check that no round is in the chamber. As they say, you can never be too careful...
Insert a finger into the chamber to verify it's empty. A shadow or trick of the light could make the chamber look empty. :scrutiny:

And the non-922(r) compliant FAL I remembered seeing a couple of years ago made it's appearance again.
How do you know it's noncompliant?

One of the local dealers here told me that back when the show was downtown the had to watch for anti-gunners who would try to slip .22's into guns on display so that an "accidental shooting" would occur and the show would get shut down. Like I said this was told to me second hand so I can't validate it. Knowing the mentality of the "peace-loving antigunners" it wouldn't surprise me though.

How do you know it's noncompliant?
I spoke to the person selling it as a "genuine Israeli FAL" when it made its first appearance at a gun show during the dark days of the AWB. He allowed as he'd assembled it with an Israeli parts kit on a new Imbel receiver. A little questioning and he began to brag about how ALL of the parts except the receiver itself were "Genuine Israeli." So it didn't make the parts count - and at the time, building it with the "evil features" was also illegal.

"Evil features" are no longer an issue, but unless the owner went back and put in US-made hammer, trigger, sear, etc., it's still non-922(r) compliant.

Could you classify the ND as a loose nut behind the trigger?

Every so often at one of the WAC gun shows, sombody drops something, and it reverberates through the hall. Gets real quiet for about a minute, people start looking for a place to dive. Then life goes on.
