A fella I know is a ROTC instructor, CHL instructor and a purveyor of holsters and such in his spare time. He was at the Austin show last weekend and reports the following.

A coupla guys spent some time at his tables looking at holsters and then moved on. Shortly after, he heard one round fired about two rows over.

Apparently, this one guy tried on a shoulder holster; reached suddenly into his fanny pack and pulled a gun. The Springfield XD was concealed, loaded and untied. As he inserted the pistol into the holster, muzzle to the rear, he had his finger on the trigger of his XD-40 and it fired rearward.

A man behind him was struck in the leg but the bullet exited and came to rest against a table or some other object.

It may not have happened should the pistol have had an actual selectable manual safety and it definitely wouldn't happen if that scarecrow had a brain.

Shouldn't the Second Amendment be changed to read "The right of the people with brains to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed"?

This is just the kind of thing we don't need. As an owner of a Springfield XD9, I have found its triple safety system to be far safer than most tupperware (shoots and feels better in the hand too) This is a clearcut case of not using the most important safety of all; the one between the ears :banghead:

Unbelievable lucky...

At every gun show I've been to, (which isn't that many), it was wall-to-wall people. A shoulder holster fired gun wouldn't have hit a leg, it would have hit a chest or back. And I always found the "NO LOADED WEAPONS" signs to be very annoying and insulting. Unfortunatly, this type of incident gives those signs more credence.

Oh well, C'est-la-vie, and Carry On!

Agreed!!!!!!! The gun worked as it was designed. The owner did not work as designed. The problem is the owner!!!

The two loudest sounds in the world are............. A gun going bang when it should have gone click............. And in the middle of a fight a gun going click when it should have gone bang.

The last gun show I went to, they didn't allow personal guns. Is this just a Michigan thing?

Whenever I'm holster shopping, or any other shopping where I might need to pull my gun, I unload it before going in, keeping a loaded mag or speed loader in a pocket. Even though I could safely unload it in the store, the guy behind the counter might not be as confident. I've seen the look of relief when I've gone for my gun while at the same time saying, "I unloaded it before coming in." I'm sure they've all been made nervous by someone they don't know handling a loaded gun. It's a courtesy that I think is appreciated.

You know, there are two problems here:

1. Glocks, XD's, and similar pistols are excellent guns, and the internal safeties do their job: but they ARE more dangerous guns in the hands of someone who has a momentary brainfart and makes a mistake. An external safety really does help.

2. Those of us who rant and rave about stupid gun owners making such mistakes tend to ignore the reality that any one of us can have a brainfart at any time. It's happened to me, and I'm willing to bet it's happened to every single person reading this. If we happen to have a gun in our hands at the time of the brainfart, we, too, might become guilty of just such an ND. It's no good saying "It'll never happen to me" - Murphy is alive and well, and just waiting to hear us say the fatal words!

That's why I'm installing Cominolli safeties on some of my Glocks (the ones I carry most frequently) - see here for details. I agree they're not necessary: but they sure help to protect against brainfarts!

What time did this occur nemesis? It was the Saxet gun show right? I was there Saturday morning. I bought some cleaning supplies.

yeap there is something to be said for an external saftey... (safe/fire/decock/whatever)

of course - the person using the weapon should ALSO be trained... pull - saftey off - point - shoot. (or some variation of that plan - not necessarily in that order... or in any order - maybe unsaftey on way to point of aim... )

point being - that when you train a certain way... you get in your head to do certain things... that become ingrained over time (good and bad habits can be formed this way)

In the case of this guy - i'm not gonna say he was stupid - prolly handling his gun the way he has for however long that might have been. This time a brainfart got him.... that never got him before(probably)... but a different mindset would have had him training that the saftey comes off just before i'm getting ready to SHOOT something.... not just "handling" the gun.

If it did have an external safety and he had trained his mind to think/do that way - his brainfart would not have resulted in a guy getting shot in the leg.

by the same token... i hear of people (gun articles etc...) who don't train that "way" and end up pulling uselessly at the trigger of a gun (when they need it) since its saftied and end up getting shot.

bah - so this longwinded post mearly echo's the "saftey is in the head" note. Sure is nice to have brainfart protection tho.

The only ones I've been to are here in Texas, and not only do they allow personal guns, but they'd probably lose half their customers if they didn't.

That interests me, anybody else see that anywhere?

Last gunshow i was at required unloaded weapons as verified by a local PD ... ty-wrap through chamber/mag hole... (didn't notice how that worked for those guns w/o a mag hole... prolly tied the bolt back or what not... )(or revolver.. through cylinder... to keep cylinder from locking up?) only saw auto's and mag fed guns when i was going through line to get in.

<edit: this was in Longview>

This coupled with the guy that shot all those hunters is going to do nothing but fan the flames of the anti-gun, anti-hunting crowd! :banghead:

Yes, it could have been worse if it had been kid behind him. Gonna make me think twice before I take my kids with me to a show again.

Austin show shooting

1- The shooter was wearing his "Thunder Ranch" Tshirt, they still teach the 4 rules there?
2-YES, get rid of all guns like Glocks without an external safety! Let's start with revolvers. Let's review-what about guns with a combo lock before you fire? "safer" guns isn't the way to go- education is.
3-The Austin show requires all guns brought in to be unloaded and the action wire tied to prevent being loaded/fired etc.
This does not apply to concealed weapons as 99% of us know that you don't pull it out even at a show- which is what this moron did....

Too bad he wasn't trying on an IWB @ 4 o'clock position. He would have only shot himself in the buttcheek. Uhhhh, what's that rule...................OH YEAH, FINGER OUTSIDE OF THE TRIGGER GUARD UNTIL YOUR READY TO SHOOT !

Am I the only one who thinks it's a good idea to have a Red Gun training aid version of your carry gun?

Handy for practicing draws, handy for holster shopping, and 100% safe (unless you want to beat someone over the head with it).

You know, when I was shopping for a carry holster for my main gun I went to the gun show with my normal carry piece unloaded and tied so I could fit it to the holsters without endangering anyone. I figured if I was going to be handling it constantly throughout the show floor I should be as safe as possible for the other patrons. I did not reload until I was back in my car with the gun pointed in a safe direction.

This guy needs to have the rules tatoo'd on the interior of his eyelids and the victim needs a chance to shoot the guy in the leg with his own gun as payback for the pain and suffering.

Good post. The other way of thinking is very clearly one of the mindsets that leads to gun control laws.

Funny, but I was always taught to never put my finger on the trigger unless I wanted to shoot the gun. But, then again, dad was teaching me how to shoot a "real gun", his Smith Model 66 revolver. Bet it would make him crazy to see me with my Glock "tactical tupperware."

And, did I hear once that you should never try a holster with a loaded gun until you were sure they worked safely together?

OH YEAH, FINGER OUTSIDE OF THE TRIGGER GUARD UNTIL YOUR READY TO SHOOT !

Looks like we have a winner!!! Poor gun handling technique is at fault here. You just don't put you finger on the trigger until you are ready to shoot, it's just that simple. I do think it is a good idea for all guns in a gunshow, both those on the tables and those brought in on the body, be unloaded. Seems there are a number of "experts" who don't have a clue about safe gun handling. I see these guys on the range all the time and there are bullet holes through the roof on the firing line. :uhoh:

If it happened about the time I went by the gun show, I can understand why it happened. I walk in, and the blasted place is DARK! Dang lights went out because of the storms.

Evil Ed has it right. I NEVER pull my carry piece out to show to someone or try in a holster.

Are we 100% sure that this actually happened? I did not hear about it on the news, nor did I see it in the paper. Doesn't mean that it was not reported in both, but I didn't see it. Nor have I talked to anyone who has heard about it, including people who attended the show.
