ND At Austin Gun Show

heh - i'd go w/ the glocks etc we might as well start w/ revolvers argument...

CEPT....

even most idiots i know handle revolvers differently than they do auto's cause ... well... they think it can go off at any time...(imagine that)

you WILL note in my post - that i tried to say TRAINING was key - and even training in the opposite direction was required for those that do not HAVE a manual safety.

heh - somehow i don't recall saying i wanted to ban guns... i guess that is the OPPOSITE of the anti view... the "gun liberal" assuming my remarks were intended to say that glocks etc were bad because they don't have a manual safety so should be banned... you people w/ that so called view can kiss my butt.... my POINT was that TRAINING in YOUR weapon will save brainfarts... and a manual safety is ONE more HURDLE for your BRAINFART to go over. (if your TRAINING trains you to only unsafety the weapon when you are getting ready to FIRE it...) VICE VERSA (i noted) i've hear tell of people who BRAINFARTED in a "SITUATION" where they clicked on the safety and didn't fire - and got shot in the process ...

its gonna boil down to training - the four rules etc... if you adhere to em explicitly - you CAN'T ND.... its just not possible if you follow em all the time.

So YES - while i view guns that don't have a manual safety that you can at least 99% of the time rely on... as bad... i don't think everyone should not have em...(hell - some fans APPLAUD them as great "carry weapons" (prolly what this ND guy was thinking no?)

If this DORK had a gun - and carried it safetied(were it to have one)... he'd not had a ND no matter where his trigger finger was... (99.99999999999% of the time)

if he'd followed the basic rules - his finger wouldn't have been there to begin with... (followed rule = 100% not gonna get a ND)

point being - if the damn gun had a manual safety someone wouldn't have gotten shot... (provided the person carried "on safety")

it still boils down to the training/awareness... and i hope to hell the person who "accidentally" shot someone gets his fair share... because he looks bad to US... he looks bad to THEM... and worse... he makes THEM look at US worse...

J/Tharg!

zippo8,

Yes, it could have been worse if it had been kid behind him. Gonna make me think twice before I take my kids with me to a show again.

Yet you put them in a car every day... :scrutiny:

ExtremeDooty,

Whenever I'm holster shopping, or any other shopping where I might need to pull my gun, I unload it before going in, keeping a loaded mag or speed loader in a pocket. Even though I could safely unload it in the store, the guy behind the counter might not be as confident. I've seen the look of relief when I've gone for my gun while at the same time saying, "I unloaded it before coming in." I'm sure they've all been made nervous by someone they don't know handling a loaded gun. It's a courtesy that I think is appreciated.

Actually, we appreciate you asking us before you "go for your gun" in the first place. Folks suddenly "going for a gun" in a gun store make us nervous. We might not hear them say "I unloaded it already" over all the loud noises. ;)

I think that's still too unecessary. If I'm shopping for a holster, the gun is in a carrying case. I set the case on the counter and say, "I need a holster for this".

...and for that, we thank you. That is, indeed, the preferred method. :)

The Washington Arms Collector show in Puyallup and Monroe WA require all weapons, either personal or for sale, to be unloaded and the action tied in some fashion. People entering the grounds with a carry weapon are "required" to unload in front of show staff and have the weapon zip tied before entering the show.

At the vendor tables, you cannot have any ammo on the table that fits any weapon on the same table.

The local PD has a presence at the show, probably 4-5 officers and also hired armed security staff. I would think that an ND inside the show here would result in the arrest of the person involved. Unlawful discharge of a weapon would be the initial charge and of course they would check for a valid CCW.

Too bad there is no crime against stupidity.

Ranburr I don't think anyone is trying to convince you. Nemesis is just telling us about something that a friend told him that happened at a gun show. I know for a fact that this happens at gun shows from time to time so I don't see any good reason to doubt Nemesis or his source.

ranburr,

This is a message sent out by a friend of mine who had a table and was at the show:

On Sunday 11/21/04 at around 1425 hours, a CHL holder brought in a loaded
pistol to the Austin Gun Show and wanted to try on a holster. did not
inform show staff that he was carrying a loaded pistol. he unloaded the
magazine, but as he was going to remove the one in the chamber he squeezed a round out of his HK .40 and sent a Corbon round through the leg of the guy next to him. thru-and-thru wound. victim will survive, luckily it did not hit his femoral artery. many thanks to the 25 police officers and
firefighters in the building who immediately responded.

Significant details are different in his version versus the one reported here. However, the base fact of the ND occurrence has been corroborated.

I believe it happened.

Sturmruger, I am just pointing out that it did not make the local paper or news and often unfounded rumors get started. I am not questioning anyone's motives, I am simply saying that we ought to verify that it really happened. I am only skeptical because Austin is an extremely liberal area and this is the kind of thing that would normally have the local antis and the city govt (one in the same) foaming at the mouth to ban gun shows in the city.

It may not have happened should the pistol have had an actual selectable manual safety and it definitely wouldn't happen if that scarecrow had a brain.
The only safety that we know failed was the one between the shooter's ears. :(

time

ranburr,
just give them time they'll get aound to it,their probably still trying to digest all that thanksgiving tofu and bean sprots.

Here they also have "No Firearms" sign everywhere outside the gun show, and legal ones too. At the last one parking was a mile away so my friend dropped my off in front and went to park. Only then did I realize I was still carrying my Kimber CDP and had forgot to leave it in his truck.

The difference between me and Mr. ND though, is even though I wore my gun into the show I would never, never be so stupid as to pull it out. As long as it's concealed no one's the wiser so in my case no harm, no foul. But the reason they are all "No Loaded Guns" is these guys and I'm glad they are. As I've said before I've about had it with looking over and seeing a shotgun or Glock being pointed right at me.
