Well thanks for all the input, guys. I passed up a Model 12 bird gun for $300 about a week or so back, due to my own indecision on what to do. Oops. Would have made a good gun for a project like this.

AND ON THAT NOTE...I wonder...if I buy a Winchester, should I spend the money on having the Cody firearms museum do a serial number check, just to make sure I didn't accidentally stumble on something valuable, before I take a sawz-all to the barrel.

No, you go to ShotgunWorld Winchester lovers section post pic with gun specifications and they will tell you if the gun is special or not.

I picked up what I thought was a beater at a local pawn shop. It had a cracked stock, no finish on the metal some deep gouges in the outside of the receiver, barrell was cut to 22", generally a pathetic looking 12. I felt sorry for it and it followed me home. After a good cleaning, glue job on the stock and a little lube it is the best running 12 that I have. ( I run my 12's hard and fast in competition)

Lafitte

You might also keep an eye out for a Norinco copy of the Win 97. I bought one several years ago and I have been extremely pleased with it. It appears to me to be an exact copy of the Winchester 97 riot gun. I keep it behind my back door for intruders.
