and you wanted new pistol. Well, I may answer my own question here, but I figured I would get some THR advise anyway. I can spend $450 on a new pistol and I have two voids in my collection. Sensibilty tells me to buy a good .22 cal auto like a Buckmark or a Ruger 22/45, but my wild side really wants a 357 or 44 mag revolver. I don't have either a 22 cal pistol or a revolver. I could hunt with revolver, but that is the only way I can justify it. My wife and I would really enjoy 22 and it would be much cheaper to feed. Suggestions? Comments? Thanks guys.

sure, a .22 would be sensible, but that's no fun!

i'm a .357 addict, so i'd probably go out and buy a new ruger or a used smith. maybe even a used dan wesson with multiple interchangeable barrels. but you can bet i'd buy another [possibly superfluous] .357.

Everybody should have a .357 revolver ! The only problem with them is that once you have one you'll want to buy more. I would suggest a .357 before you get .44, you'll probably get a lot more use out of it. $450 should be just about right for a good used Smith 686, my personal favorite.

Get a 686. You can shoot meek .38s or full-blown .357 magnums from it. Just make sure to clean the cylinder after shooting .38 specials or your .357 brass will get trapped in there!

*Arnold voice* .22 is for girly men.

The only problem with them is that once you have one you'll want to buy more.
Very true.

I disagree that 22s are for girly men. 22s are for poor men.:D I just don't know if I can justify buying a 357 right now. Thanks for the advice guys. Keep it coming.

I will never own another Glock. Thanks anyway though.:D

I have a 22 revolver. Guess it wouldn't hurt to upgrade it though. Forgot I even had that old pistol.

.22

Prefer a nice Older Model 18 personally.
Still a OLDer quality .22 revolver is such a great teaching tool for new shooters, and serious training tool for center-fire handguns, especially revolvers.

They are not making these revolvers like they used to, hence the reason to get one while one can.

Semi-
Again I run to the Older.
Colt Woodsman, High Standard, are two really fine quality semi-autos.

New? Buckmark.

I am a big believer in quality .22 lr handguns.
Simple, not goopy, not heavy, just timeless proven quality .

New shooters appreciate this simple, as they need guns that do not tire them out.
Elderly appreciate it as as arthritis and all does creep up and cause bad days.

One never knows when they themselves may get down, and Doctors Orders says NO recoil greater than .22 lr after a detached retina, back, neck or shoulder surgery.

well damn, I really expected all of THR to tell me to be sensible and by a 22 for cheap practice. Would change anybody's opinion if I said I already own three other pistols in 9mm and 45?

Everyone should have at least one decent .22LR handgun, and $450 gives you a lot of choices. Browning, Ruger, plenty of revolvers, and keep your eye open for a used one. You might be able to locate a good Beretta, High Standard Trophy, Colt Woodsman, maybe even a S&W M41 for $450. Get the .22 first, and let the .357 wait until later. The money you save on shooting a .22 will make it a lot easier.

You should not put your selfish desire for a new shiny pistol first. You should send it to Tecumseh. Just PM me and I will send you my address.

I would just buy the .22 instead of the revolver. Anything left over can go into the revolver fund.

A good .22, revo or autoloader, or .357 revolver would be a great choice. As for me, I'd get another Ruger P90. It's no beauty queen, but it's a hell of a gun anyway, and I mean that in the most positive way. As for already having a .45? It's impossible to have too many .45s. :D

sometimes I wonder if people even bother to read the whole thread before they post a reply. The choice is between a large caliber revolver or a 22 pistol. Other semi autos aren't even in the question.:D I have to be able to justify this with the wifey and for that to happen it really needs be something I don't already have.:D
