I have tried shooting a few different Glock models, and they just don't "fit" my hands.

So, I vote 1911-A1. Basic Model? Springfield Armory GI-45.

Not knocking the Rock Island, STI, etc, just not familiar with them

Any 1911 platform at that price range will get a fine handgun. Choose one that you can upgrade as you can afford it and you will have a real fun handgun...

Fnp-45

The FNP-45 is a great 45 and a great value at about $500+... (CDNN has 'em for $510)

Why nobody mention the Ruger P90???

Accurate, strong as a tank, ergonomic and with all the goodies (external hammer, ambidx safety, decocker, accessory rail, etc...)

I think is one of the most underrated semiauto out there.

I'm on the prowl for a good used one so I can add an inexpensive .45 to my collection....

I bought a 70 series colt this year that had maybe 2 mags thru it. For $450.

Taurus PT-1911 with rebate.

I've heard a few negative stories, but most seem to love them. I am buying one very soon, and I think it'll have me writing Kimber a heartfelt letter.

It depends...

A Glock may be hard to beat but there's something to say for a design that has been around for close to 100 years and is still going strong. If you want to be able to personalize your firearm easily and have the biggest selection of do-dads to choose from, the 1911 is the way to go.
If just looking for a out of the box good gun with no plans of "tweaking", both are contenders.
It boils down to what you're most comfortable with, definitely handle both of them and ideally shoot them both. Opinions are like a-holes (this is a general statement which is not meant to be applied to previous posters), everyone has one and feels theirs is the best solution. That's what works for them, it might not for you or me. My CCW of choice is a 3" Colt Python, a very rare choice but what works for me.
I hope this helps.
Mike

Of the choices you gave 1911, specifically an RIA. If I just got to pick a .45 I'd go W/ a CZ97B
