So I took my newly built SBR in 5.56 out today and shot some LC M885 ammo through my suppressor. We filmed it out on its maiden voyage and after reviewing the video we noticed an extreme amount of smoke coming out of every orifice of the gun.

Theres smoke coming from the trigger hole and even the bottom of the magazine! The gas is blowing by the loaded rounds through the magazine and out the bottom metal of the mag!

Is this normal? too much pressure?

Thoughts?

Pretty normal. It's less obvious when the air is thinner and less humid.

The suppressor's goal is to retain gas, and when the breech is open it flows back.

it is pretty normal as Zak said. With most suppressed guns you get that amount of gas and you can feel it on your face but can't always see it. When you put a couple quarts of oil in the gun, the gas comes out a lot blacker and wetter and you can see it at little easier. (not that that's a goal or anything)

I knew the suppressor would redirect gas back through the breech. But even through the bottom of the magazine??? I did have a good bit of oil on the gun and in the suppressor though, that may be where the excessive smoke was coming from, burning CLP.

Even if you have a round chambered it's not sealed, so that round gets covered in carbon; and from there the gas has a bunch of paths out the rear of the gun.

if i had a machine shop handy, and an FFL, i think it would be cool to design a gun to be suppressed.

e.g. make the bolt lugs on the outside of the barrel so that gas would be directed forward. seems like that would be especially effective on an open-bolt design with fixed firing pin. of course, it would be a kinda large bolt. but in the right design it could work

Did you say you put oil in a rifle can? Dont do that, lol. No really, dont. The pressures are way to high to add a uncompressable substance into the can. Some manufacturers like AAC state you can add 5cc water to thier rifle can to only help with flash elimination in combat and to never use oil.

As far as gas escaping from every crack....normal.
