I do a fair amount of hiking, and I usually carry an AK these days with my trusty Sig on my hip. But I'm thinking about sticking a shotgun into the loadoat too, and was wondering if any of you had thoughts on scabbards. Being able to stick a shotgun onto my pack and having a second long arm, or if I ditch the pack for speed (my ammo isn't in there) I can still move with three guns, with the AK in my hands, shotgun on my back, and a pistol. Like a short range New York reload.

If you have experience, what kinds to avoid? Voodoo seems to have the best price...anyone actually used one?

Sorry, I'm just trying to figure out where someone would hike that felt the need to carry THREE guns.is this a park in downtown Detroit or similar? Why would you want that extra 8-9 pounds?

Any decent leather scabbard would work, assuming you can fasten it to your pack

NVM the taunts do what you want

i own a voodoo tactical that i got from cheaper than dirt and it serves me pretty well

ive used it with the shoulder strap and its well... just ok
but using the molle attatchment on a backpack its great
it stays exactly where i want it and has held up to all of my abuse
the best use ive found for them tho isnt my shotgun but my 30-30 instead of a sling

no not baghdad lol...just national forest. I'm planning a co-ed hiking trip you see, and two of the girls have never even shot, so I'm trying to spread some second amendment love around. 5 people total coming, being me and another guy, and three girls. I wouldn't pass around a long arm to everyone in the group to carry (lee enfield, mosin, AK, shotgun), because it's a long and toughish hike, and its harder with a mosin/enfield (I love it, but it's an aquired taste). The one girl is very interested in shooting a shotgun, and if I could let her shoot that, my sig, and my AK her first time shooting, and carry them all in myself then give another rifle and pistol to my guy friend, I think I'll have a convert. Savvy? No I'm not fantasizing about the end of the world...

And I can handle the weight of another gun. That's not a problem at all. Just wondering about how well do scabbards work.

I use the VooDoo scabbard with my HD shotgun but it won't work with a rifle sighted barrel (too snug).Works real well with my Marlin 336 30-30 as well.

WHEW! here I thought things in Central Park were getting out of hand again........

Do NOT bring full power house loads for those girls to shoot for the first time - VERY light target loads, like the AA running well under 1200 fps. Don't forget the eyes and ears for all as well

I also have a Voodoo scabbard. I second the recommendation of using the MOLLE attachment rather than the shoulder strap. It'll do what you're asking, except for the part about keeping the shotgun if you ditch the pack.

WTH if you want to carry your shotgun go for it. The VooDoo scabard and a MOLLE pack setup is a lot cheaper than a Eberlestock pack. Those are nice but pricey.

The best backpack scabbard I've found to date is made by this outfit:

http://alaskasportsmanproducts.com/

I have a carbine/shotgun scabbard as well as the belly holster for a revolver and both have logged many miles without problem. They're simple and straight-forward, with extra tough nylon and heavy stitching. They're intended to be used frequently in the field for hiking and fishing in Alaska. The other brands I've seen have had a lot of extra loops and tangle-spots on them.

I have a Voodoo scabbard attached to the side of my ruck via molle. Its handy and secure, but it sure throws the weight off to one side. I compensate by keeping ammo in an exterior pouch on the other side.

the mod gears are the voodoo tacticals at least thats what they sent me when i bought mine

Has anyone ever tried to put any 20ga guns or youth model (21" barrel) in these scabbards? I'm contemplating getting one or two.

The trip is slated for next month...and I would never put pictures of people besides myself on the internet with guns. I would hesitate to put up even pictures of me. Guess you'll have to just take my word for it

To oneounceload, I toyed with letting them shoot 3'' slugs...but I'm interested in one of them...so it'll be skeet stuff at first. I think the true conversion/seeing the light will come when she shoots the AK.

No idea who makes these, picked it up at a gun show for a Benelli M1 Super 90. I strap it to a 4 wheeler when at the farm.

Thank you to all who contributed. I love this forum.

I ordered the Voodoo from sportmansguide. When the trip happens I shall post a review if anyone is curious.
