I'm in the market for a good HD shotgun, but from what I've read from their website, the work they do to the guns doesn't seem to justify the price. Would it be better to just by a Rem Marine Magnum and put some decent sights on it?

I was looking at the Wilson guns, but............

$170 - 18" Police turn in 870 Wingmaster -parkerized. ex. condition, stocks beat.
$45 - BEEEAUTIFUL Remmy walnut (matte) replacement stock set, short forearm
$25 - TacStar sidesaddle (6 shells)
$45 - Wilson/Scattergun 2 round mag extension with sling attachment
------
$290 - Slick as S*&* , super grouping, accurate, reliable HD/game shotgun:D

I could add a big safety button, sights, and armortuff, but out to 40-50 yards I use my bead as well as/better than most guys use sights, I like parkerizing, and I can work the safety just fine thank you.

What you need to do is find the base price of the shotgun and factor in the cost of the accessories they add to it. Factor in an average gunsmith labor rate for the time it took for them to install those accessories. The additional money after that is how much they're charging for the name. For a hallway-distance chopper, do you really need all that extra gear and get-up? Depends on how often you expect unwanted guests I would think. My Winchester Defender does everything I want it to and more and at significantly less cost. The money I saved buys ammo and practice. Remember: Gear does not make perfect. Practice does not make perfect. Perfect practice makes perfect. More practice makes better practice and soon, perfect practice.

IMO, what I said in the referenced thread still applies, and may until the end of time.

Get a short barreled 870, or other Big Four pumpgun.

Make sure the stock fits reasonably well, and the trigger comes in at 4 lbs or less.

Add some sling studs, and shoot it until it feels like a body part. Start with light loads and work up. If you use good form and concentrate, proficiency comes surprisingly quickly. BA/UU/R....

Once you're deadly only to the right people, you may decide what mods and addons can improve performance for YOU and what just deplete your cash.

Many thanks to all of you for the info. How difficult is it to install sights on a stock barrel ??? Are there any special tools I will need for the job?

You are overlooking something important here. Someone has to pay for all that advertising and the slick catalog.

Installing a Wilson/Scattergun front sight is easy and if done right, it won't come off. Grind off the bead and clean the barrel under where the sight will be down to bare metal. I also file undercuts everywhere I can on the pedistal. Clean the barrel and sight with brake cleaner. I use a better quality epoxy then is supplied with the sight. JB Weld has worked good for me. Fill the base of the sight with epoxy and press it down over the pedistal. Clamp in place and clean off the excess epoxy. Let it set for 24 hours. (Don't use the fast setting epoxy) I also drill a small hole through the sight and pedistal and insert a roll pin. It may not be needed, but I like the insurance.

I bought a used Winchester 1300, came with 8 rnd mag tube and sling studs in black synthetic furniture. I put a 6 rnd side saddle and a sling on it. Works fine for me.

Cost:
$100.00 for gun (including fees and sales tax)
$35.00 for the sling
$30.00 for the side saddle

Total cost: $165.00

Money saved went into ammo, cleaning supplies and range time.

Scatter Gun Tech Shotguns

Wilson will rebuild your Rem 870 to the current SGT standard for less than $200... I had two done... both shoot great are considerably cheaper than the new product.

FWIW

If you buy new, take a look at Vang Comp shotguns. They are IMO better products.

I think that SGT are secondary to Vang. -and I say this very humbly because I am devoted to Wilson Combat handguns.

I don't know. Putting parts on is easy, but when it comes to refinishing and smaller details of construction the cost goes up.

I am going through this right now, redoing an 11-87, Brownell's worked out better.

AHM, it's about your balancing time and money. You have to decide for yourself.

For me, the Wilsons were worth buying. Order the guns, they come how I want them, I write a check. No needless messing around with catalogues or the net or wasting my time chasing down parts or re-installing something incorrectly done by me.

They are excellent weapons. I recommend them. As to worth, that is a personal decision.

IMHO the Wilson / Scattergun Technology shotguns are not worth the sticker price. Having said that, they are a good product. I just don't believe that the high sticker price is worth the work done on them.

Lets look at their Standard Model's specifications:

Remington 12 ga. 3" 870 Magnum with an 18" barrel (cylinder bore)
Adjustable TRAK–LOCK® Ghost Ring rear sight, ramp-type front sight with tritium self-luminous insert
Extended Magazine Tube, total capacity: 7
Sidesaddle Shell Carrier, extended capacity:
Synthetic Buttstock and Tactical Fore Grip with 11,000 candlepower light
High-Visibility, Non-Binding Follower
Extra-Power Heavy-Duty Stainless Magazine Tube Spring
Jumbo Head Safety
Multi-Purpose Tactical Sling
Buttstock Swivel and Rigid Magazine Tube Sling Mount
Mil-Spec Black Manganese Phosphate Finish (Parkerized) or Armor-Tuff

Wilson's Retail Price $959

Now lets look at how much these items can be purchased for individually at retail prices.

Remington 12 ga. 3" 870 Magnum with an 18" barrel ($300 new)

Adjustable TRAK–LOCK® Ghost Ring rear sight, ramp-type front sight with tritium self-luminous insert ($150 including gunsmith installation)

Extended Magazine Tube ($35)

Sidesaddle Shell Carrier ($25)

Synthetic Buttstock and Tactical Fore Grip with 11,000 candlepower light (under $200)

High-Visibility, Non-Binding Follower ($10)

Extra-Power Heavy-Duty Stainless Magazine Tube Spring ($10)

Jumbo Head Safety ($10)

Multi-Purpose Tactical Sling ($35)

Buttstock Swivel and Rigid Magazine Tube Sling Mount ($25)

Mil-Spec Black Manganese Phosphate Finish (Parkerized) or Armor-Tuff (Free - the factory finish on a new 870 is pretty good)

When I added up the above prices I came up with $800. A full $175 below Wilson's cost. And keep in mind that the above prices I showed are pretty much full retail. If you shop around and or purchase used you should be able to put together the exact same thing that Wilson sells for well under $600.

I would put up my self built shotgun against any Wilson Standard Shotgun and I only have about $480 into mine.

Regards,

Rob

Skunk,

They do not show on their web site that they do any action or trigger work on SGs. They do however do some other work such as install ghost ring sights, convert to 3" chamber, convert to left hand safety, etc.

Rob

If you must buy a custom shotgun then go with a Vang Comp gun. If the 870 is still to high a price then you can get a Vang Comp 590.
