Scenarios other than SD where your guns might be useful.

I was reading another thread where someone asked how to best bury his guns. The OP was ridiculed by many for being paranoid. My question: what kind of possible scenarios do you envision where your guns might come in handy.

Katrina like collapse of local government?
Terrorist attack?
Government run amok?

My question: what kind of possible scenarios do you envision where your guns might come in handy.

1. I lived through Katrina, and was very happy to have the ability to protect myself, those I loved, and our property.

2. Hunting. Everyone in my family and friends are hunters.

3. Snakes. I hate poisonous snakes, and I think I killed about 60 last year.

4. Recreation. Target shooting is very theraputic.

5. Community. It is part of our culture and a part of conversation when you get something new.

6. Family and Heritage. Cleaning and oiling my grandfather's old sweet-sixteen has a way of continuing the bond to my family's past and makes those who have passed not feel so far away.

7. The Second Amendment. We ARE the last line in the defense of our constitution from all enemies foreign and domestic. I'd hate to show up bare-handed.

The main purpose I use my guns for is hunting; self defense is secondary, mostly because it comes up less often, though its nice when you can get firearms that work well at both (such as having an 870 with 18" and 28" barrels).

Uses?

Recreational Shooting
Hunting
Self Defense
Vermin/Pest Control
Livestock Protection

JWarren,

Excellent response. I agree with each and every one. Particularly #7. It is this answer that intrigues me. On the prior thread I referenced in my original post many seemed to scoff at the possibility that hiding one's guns may someday be necessary.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. Armed citizens are the last bulwark against an overreaching government. In the Congo, Sudan and other nations today we see unarmed innocents being slaughtered by those who have weapons.

I suppose that some here consider the possibility that we might need to defend ourselves against the government as ludicrous. That we are too civilized. Our society too stable. That an armed citizenry is a huge contributor to that stability is often ignored. Equally often ignored is the fact that stability and civilization could quite easily be disrupted.

The course of human history has been one of barbarism, cruelty and instability. Our current condition is, in the context of history, an anomaly. I don't think it is too much of a stretch, particularly in these challenging times, to remain vigilant.

If the time comes that it becomes necessary to hide our guns we will be in a heap of trouble.

Tricks...

Get a couple of surplus (PVC) Navy Sonobouy tubes. If you need to 'hide' long guns... (and pistols): Insert your guns (may hve to break some of them down... or remove pistol grips) in the tube. Fill the tube full of dry (uncooked) rice, Screw the lid on and duct tape the end of the cap. Bury it. The rice will act as a dessicant... and will never 'stick' to the weapons at all. (The Viet Cong used this trick)

I practice target shooting but don't hunt (anymore). 'Killed enuff stuff in my life.

Varmints (poisonous snakes) Rattlers. I let the rest of 'em come 'n go... especially the King Snakes. They're good to have around.

Predators: I've observed mountain lion tracks 3' past my gate several times. Coyotes all over the place 'n some wild dogs. This is an unincorporated area... Open Range. 'Still the 'wild' west. :)

A rainy day, a Brownells catalog, and a firearm that just cries out to have something done to it,,,,,,,:p
The hobby is just as bad as collecting classic cars!

If it's time to bury your guns, it's time to dig them up.

That said, this morning I looked out the back window and saw this:

Hornet_Nest.jpg

If I was in a rural area I'd blast it with both barrels from my Stoeger Uplander. Alas, I live in a suburban subdivision, so the exterminator will handle it.

Was blasting away at a watermelon once, when a bunch of bees showed up to start sucking up the juice. Using 6 & 7.5 shot, lit those bees up. Didn't find so much as one bee corpse/body part, and the number of bees seemed unchanged on the watermelon bits. I reckon that if you lit up the hive, you'd have one nasty swarm of stinging insects coming your way right quick.

Lesson learned: Birdshot is for shooting birds. Until we come up with bee shot (not beehive rounds), I'd steer clear of using shotguns against bees. You may be able to take out their "bunker", but the ones that survive will eat you alive.

A big +1 on the therapy.
Since being self introduced to firearm ownership, I have become a much calmer person. Especially upon receiving my CHL.

Up until recently, it has been pistols. Now the calming effect of 300 yard rifle slow fire has me hooked.

Dang I need to get my sniper Mosin up n runnin

My rifles DID come in handy post Katrina. The Army didn't understand why there were no looters on MY street -- until I reported to their intel guy, openly carrying an M1A with bayonet. He wished there were more of me.

I can feed myself with my rifles.

Sadly, old as I am, I fear a day that certain persons on this continent might have have their status changed to "target". I pray that day doesn't arrive but if I'm willing, in defense of our Constitution, to personally be responsible for the death of twenty million Russians with a four-second twist of my wrist, why do they think that they're so "special"?

I hope we can all pass away quietly in a bed but if required, my rifles and I will get to work.

My guns are not for for SD they are for shooting! SD is just a side effect bonus. Similiar to that of most any aluminum baseball bat!

Well, you could use a rifle barrel for a pry bar, or you can use your pistol's butt to hammer nails. Oh wait, you mean other uses, as in other shooting uses. Sorry, I misunderstood.

I remember hearing about someone who used his rifle to clear a downed tree from blocking a road. He didn't have a saw or an ax handy, so he shot it in half with his rifle, and then he was back on his way. I have used a rifle to shoot down trees before. It sure is a lot more fun than a saw, IMO.

Think back to when you were younger and the time that you and your dad went out to the range, woods, what have you.

Shooting brought my dad and I closer. It was something that we did every week and I have to tell you that I appreciate the time I was able to spend with my father while out shooting. He wouldnt shoot but I always did! Hell he had started me training on shooting since I was 3yrs/old. I would not trade those days for anything.

Shooting is NOT a spectators sport. Its not just for Self Defense. It is and can always be a family event. That is what it is to me and I hope that everyone is taking their kids out and teaching them safe shooting. Check out your local Jaycees for their youth BB gun nights, your State Games have alot to offer the shooting sports (at least mine did). There are tons of things you can do to get out there and make a lasting impact for your kids and you!

For hunting the most dangerous game of all...

Honestly, SD is the reason I CARRY, and also why I keep a loaded rifle in the house.

However, the other 99.998% of my firearms usage is in target shooting and recreation. There are alot of benefits to shooting practice that aren't immediately apparent, such as relaxation, breath and balance control, and building hand and upper-body strength.

Oh, and "powderburn artwork." Gotta try that one!
