Had friends and family over on Christmas Eve.
One of them--who is dating the mother of my daughter's best friend-- lives in Newtown, Conn.
In fact his two kids were in the adjoining Middle and Highs School.
His younger daughter, in fact, tutored two of the girls who were killed this past summer
Turns out that Adam Lanza first parked his car at the HS.
After checking out the school--which had armed guards in place--he then drove the short distance to the grammar school and went inside on his killing spree.
I suppose we will never know what caused this nut case to change locations, but if I was a betting man I would say the armed good guys inside had something to do with it.
Interesting to note--the gent who related this to me asked me for gun training back in October. I loaned him a DVD on the topic ( A Woman's Guide to Firearms) but he never brought the subject up again

Did he say how he knows Lanza went to the HS first? (not saying he didn't, but it would be hard to use that in discussions if it's not documented somehow)

True enough.
He heard it from other towns people and from his son, who is a student in the HS.
And he knows for a fact that the HS does have armed security.
Seems to be common knowledge in the town.

This would be a perfect opportunity for an honest competent journalist to do a little research and perhaps provide the public with some very useful information to use to make up their minds about armed guards at schools and gun control in general.

Too bad there are so few of them out there. :)

One thing I'd like to toss out on this topic, within hours of the Friday press conference by the NRA, many folks started screaming that "there was armed security at Columbine and it didn't help".

But there's a strong argument that it did. While the deputy that was assigned to the school exchanged shots with his service revolver with Harris in the parking lot (at 60 yards), without actually hitting Harris, he did distract and delay him, allowing some victims to flee, and the first officer that responded, exchanged shots also inside the building, again distracting Harris and Kleibold, at least for a time, from shooting other students again.

Columbine:2 shooters using multiple (4) firearms (and explosives), entered a school of 1400 students, and killed 13.

Sandy Hook:1 shooter using 1 weapon (had more) with no explosives, entered a school of 700 and killed 26.

So 50% fewer shooters, using 25% fewer guns, with 50% fewer potential targets, killed 100% more victims.

Is it not possible that the armed resistance that the Columbine shooters encountered distracted and delayed them and accounts for the fewer victims?

Local middle and high schools have sheriff deputies assigned to them as school resource officers. This is not new here. The current lack of family values and proper parenting has created the culture of a police presence to keep violence within the schools under control. They are not prepared for the suicidal intruder intent on perceived revenge.

They also had "legal" 10 round magazines, which did not stop the shooting either.
Nothing works every time, but the law enforcement approach to school shootings also has changed because of that incident.
Then again, is the media's hatred of guns so intense that having armed professionals in the schools now considered to be extremist?

Probably won't have an official source to quote until the police report is complete. With the nature of the incident, and minors being involved, large parts of that will probably be sealed, or at the minimum, heavily redacted prior to release.

While the deterrent of an armed threat is worth mentioning, the idea of armed guards for all schools is financially untenable. There are far more fiscally wise options that money could be put toward. If it's true, use it as an argument to allow CC by faculty on campus

Some how, some way, there needs to be a citable source from this.

Somebody who witnessed this needs to get it out to some form of media outlet

Like, right now

Allowing teachers who already have cc permits to carry concealed at schools would be the ultimate goal.
They should also obtain some training in basic active shooter concepts--which I am sure the local police would be happy to provide for free.
Even if not one teacher was so armed, the deterrent factor would still be in effect, since no outsider could be sure who was or was not so armed.
Armed teaches have stopped school shooters-but the agenda driven main stream media is loathe to point that out.

It will always work!! In Israel all the teachers have firearms. And guess what?? Nobody messes with the schools. Pretty simple lesson, maybe we can learn also.
They don't put up "gun free zone" on their fences. How stupid is that.
