I am not much of a rifle person. I lean more toward handguns. However, I have been looking at rifles for more of a general use hunting, target shooting, self defense, etc…..
The only modern rifle that sticks out to me that it’s priced $500 or less is the Mossberg mvp. I have only seen them online. I am looking at .308 or something equivalent. I want iron sights as primary and maybe a scope later. This rifle would be used as shooting max 200 rounds a year and put into a truck for a road trip or maybe a hunting trip. Once again iron sights are important. Don’t suggest an auto or lever. Looking for a bolt gun just for fun.

You can google "cheap bolt action rifles". Buyer beware. Search by reviews first then back into the prices. As far as iron sights I would recommend Williams receiver sights. I have used Williams sights and there quality second to none.

A quality set of iron sights will cost as much or more than a mid-level scope. You aren't going to find usable iron sights on a budget rifle. Honestly, most of the ones that used to be included on hunting rifles were more for decoration than usefulness. There is a reason why they aren't included with most rifles.

If you absolutely, positively have to have irons then you're going to have to buy a rifle then spend 200-$300 to have iron sights added.

Ruger American ranch

I think you mean the Ruger Scout.

If I were buying a rifle that had to have irons that is what I'd get. They aren't cheap, but those are decent iron sights.

Ruger® Scout Rifle Bolt-Action Rifle Model 6803

But I've been through this time and time again. A low powered optic such as a 1-4X scope mounted on a bolt rifle does everything better than irons. They are more rugged and reliable, cheaper, more accurate, faster on target, and work infinitely better in low light. The military doesn't even use iron sights anymore.

Y’all are bumming me out. That’s what I thought would have happened. Anyone have the Mossberg MVP? That was in my price range. I like the idea of the Ruger Scout. Just too much coin for a rifle that won’t be used much for its intended purpose.

A lot come with pic rails on them. Maybe that would work with a set of pop up sights. Or a red dot optic. My brother has a Mossberg 30.06. Im not sure if it has sights or not though, He really likes it.

Another vote for the Savage Hog Hunter. I went down this path a few years ago wanting an inexpensive, threaded, 308, with sights. Pretty much made it the Hog or a Ruger. Big Ruger fan but the Scout was about double the price and much heavier. Also, the Ruger didn't really fit my ask for a truck gun.

Odd, but not many options out there in that space.

The MVP got some rough reviews early on with feeding issues. Not sure if they have that nailed down or not now. I didn't see much gain (for me) to have a detachable mag from an AR 10 so wasn't worth the possible issues to me.

Thanks for the idea. I need to handle one. This seems like a contender.

The used racks are your friends here. Military rifles like the Mosin and others are an option. Then older sporting rifles like the Savage 340 series have iron sights. Those were standard for most of the immediate post WW2 era.

Short barreled 308s are very loud and unpleasant. If you are committed to a bolt action, as advised above, a sporterized milsurp is probably the most cost effective.

if you aren’t wedded to a bolt action, there is a wonderful world of light, handy, well sighted lever action guns out there. Savages, Winchesters, Marlins, Rossis, even Mossbergs. From 22 LR to 45-70. Take a look.

I have an MVP patrol that came with irons and a picc rail from the factory. It serves its purpose; I’m happy with it.

If it don't have to be current production, I'd check out the used sporting rifle market. Their prices haven't risen as much lately as milsurps have, and you can find some pretty nice deals right now.

Simpson's gets quite a few Mausers with open sights and attractive retail prices. If I didn't already have an '06 Mauser I'd be sorely tempted by this girl -- commercial FN Mauser 98 action with Husqvarna stock and barrel for under five Benjamins:

Keep an eye out for the older Savage 110's, they had iron sights. Also, the older Savage Scout's would fit your criteria and don't have the ridiculously large detachable magazine like the current models.

If I'm not mistaken these Husqvarna's are all 6.5x55, 30-06, 8x57 and 9x57. I don't think there are any .308's.

This is news to me! I might be in trouble now

I have an MVP Patrol in 7.62 NATO that I picked up for cheap during a post-holiday sale a few years ago. The iron sights work well enough and the fibre optic front is convenient. I eventually slapped a 2.5-7x32 Weaver scope on it and called it done. The bolt fit is a little sloppy but it locks up tight and the trigger is surprisingly light. I think the ability to use AR-10 mags is a useful feature but not a must-have for me. If I had it to do all over again, I would probably have tried to find an MVP Scout instead (personal preference). I understand that the Scout rail will fit on the Patrol and so have been keeping an eye out for one. Overall, I have been happy with mine but it is a range toy that will likely never see any hard use.

Both Remington 700 BDL's I'm familiar with came with and still have iron sights.

A few years back the daughter told us the son-in-law wanted a rifle. Here comes Christmas. Savage has a rebate program running with Cabela's. I hoped for a .308 or .223 but at $250 after rebates settled for a 7mm-08 Remington which was fine since I load that cartridge. Rifle came factory scoped and in all honesty that rifle was great right out of the box. Wasn't nuts about the plastic magazine but overall a real nice rifle. Of those I have shot the Mossberg guns are also pretty good.

Iron sights? Go figure, all rifles a few secades ago were iron sights, today they all are drilled and tapped with few exceptions. Personally I would be looking slightly used on an older maybe Remington 700 BDL or ADL flavor.

LaRue just announced this recently... It's a QD "pistol iron sights" mount for a rifle for close shooting. It does seem to take up all your rail space so I'd probably just pick up a rifle with a pic rail and get Magpul BUIS sights for it?
