School teacher in Wisconsin SUSPENDED for handling firearm

Well, that's one of the MANY reasons I don't have any web page on myspace, yourspace, facebook, nosebook, or any other kind of book. And when I was working as a paramedic in the Bay Area I had my company try several times to get me to allow TV crews to ride along or do a reenactment of this rescue or that rescue. Every time I had the same answer: "Go F... yourself!" Because somebody is always waiting to find imaginary dirt or take something out of context and try to further their cause with it. Anonymity is a VERY precious commodity, and once lost is VERY difficult to replace. I like staying under the radar, out of the public eye, and with everyone wanting to "send a message" the only "message" I want to send is: What I do is nobody else's business! And my wife IS a teacher and feels exactly the same way. For the same reasons.

But if its her mugging for the camera like a gangsta, or posing seductively in a bikini (or less) holding a gun then maybe the school officials have a point.

whats bad about women in Bikinis?
they are not Ilegal, are they?

if you go and say it ok to suspend her for a bikini pic, but not for a pic with a firearm, it kind of sounds like hypocrism, no?

aslong as the activity is Legal, it should not matter what is on the Picture.

I believe another teacher or some professional woman was fired from wearing a bikini and posting pics online.
I don't recall the outcome in that case. Maybe she got reinstated and paid too.
Pictures of babes in bikinis with guns don't mix, no sir....that is unless you are like the rest of the male human race and dig it.

unless the photo was taken on school grounds, they have no reason to do anything, except maybe complain. anything else is just utterly rediculous, and illegal. i know that she can get a lawyer, but it is really to bad it has to come down to that. what has happened to our, well what used to be our country?! the stinking anti's are winning folks! maybe we can round up all the anti's and move them to .....................oh, wait, nobody would want them! freaks!

Guns always get a bad rapport. The teacher is just setting an example of her convictions of the Constitution, which every student needs to memorize.

We have a law regarding carrying near schools: It is unlawful for any person to possess or bring a firearm upon the grounds of, into, or within a distance of 1,000 feet from the grounds of a school providing instruction in kindergarten or grades 1 to 12...

So if guns are bad near schools, why not remove the fast food joints within 1K feet. Obesity is a problem for our children.

I guess supressing the Constitution is more important than our children's health.

I really hope that the students of this school district receive an education in Constitutional rights through this incident. If the authority figures in their lives, parents, teachers, and coaches, admit to this being fundamentally wrong and make an effort to correct the error then maybe something positive will come of it. If she gets reinstated with a black cloud over her head that is not a victory for us. Public participation and support for the teacher and the issues at stake will help greatly in how this is perceived and what is learned.

You are partially correct. You cannot unless you have a permit, that you can obtain for certain reasons from the Police chief.

I teach Hunter Safety, in a school. I carry 15 firearms into class each night that I teach. All I need is a letter from the Police Chief to be legal.

I had a similar thing happen to me. I was working part time for a fire department that is a little "stuck up" according to all the neighboring departments. One full time member with a reputation for being a loudmouth found my page, including pics of range shooting "mugging for the camera" and many of Olegs photos that make heads explode.

Well he went berserk, along with a lot of others. Obviously they don't know the rules because he claimed I could be arrested for the pictures and he told me to deleate the. I told him no. He was not a supervisor and had no grounds to tell me what to do on my time off.

Well in the 2 weeks after he and some others did everything but use the threat of physical violence. They were quite abusive, told me they were going to take the issue to my full time job's chief, even took the pics to the Twp. law director to see what he could do.

Realisticly nobody had any grounds to do anything but disagree with me. I stood my ground and magicly the loud mouths were quieted from the top down. I don't work there anymore for a laundry list of reasons, but I maintain a spot on the roster just to irk those specific people. I was quite ready for my "day in court" though...

FFMedic

Way to go FFMedic! I sent the teacher a message of support on her facebook page, and suggest/recommend you all do the same. If the popular opinion in her community is anti, it could go a long way to help her "decide" whether or not to push the issue rather than to bow to the crowd.

She's toast!

WI elementary and High Schools commonly have a Two Year 'Probation' period, The only ones I'm aware of that don't, have Three Year 'Probation Periods'. She just won't be offered a new contract, as was pointed out earlier.

If she's a VERY popular Teacher, then maybe enough parents could get together and scare the Supt. of Schools into keeping her on. School Supt.'s are terrified of angry parents.)

Odds are she's out and will not find it easy to get another teaching job, she'll probable have to go WAY back in the woods or more likely apply in Milwaukee (shudder) to stay in teaching.

Lots of new graduates each year who can't get teaching jobs.

This is all wrong, but it is how it works there.

Teachers pay in WI gets REAL good real fast once probation is over, the free health Insurance is a big deal too and there's a lot of competition for those jobs.

Regards,
:)

Except the health insurance is no longer really free, the benefits are dropping, and your mandated to live in milwaukee which subjects you to the obscene property taxes.

It's sad that she cowered and removed the completely harmless photo, which gave legitimacy to their idiocy. Also, when she cowered in fear, she said "I don't want to cause controversy." First, "controversy" is out of your control because, by definition, controversy is a REACTION from other people (which you cannot control).

I literally laughed out loud when I read this gem from the wkow version of the story:
Middle school parent Jennifer Buzzell said the teacher's decision to post the photograph was concerning.

"I don't think it's appropriate," Buzzell told 27 News. "I'm not sure why this would be on the computer at all."
Don't you love it when the most ignorant people are loudmouthed activists. "The computer." :D I'm surprised she didn't say "interwebs." Hey Jennifer, I find your total inability to mind your own **** business "concerning."

By the way, has anyone else noticed that the picture in question is VERY similar to Oleg's work?

Oleg ought to take high quality photos of several other employees from the same school and log a nice protest. ;)

You may be thinking of Erica Chevillar - former high school Social Science teacher from Boca Raton, FL. Some bikini pictures surfaced and everyone raised a stink, but she wasn't in violation of any school policy... I think she left the job for a more lucrative modeling gig, then ended up posing in Playboy (March 2007, in case you're wondering... :D)

A little confused with all this. Maybe someone can clear this up for me:

So the members of the Olympic shooting team would be ineligible from being public school teachers because they are poor role models and promote violence?

Just asking.

Oops, sorry double post

She is exercising her rights and gets screwed, but there are those who fail to pay taxes, lie, cheat and run the government???

If there is no more than what we see here I hope she ends up owning the school after her lawyers are done.

While most non-tenured teachers can be let go more easily, in an instance like this where the admin made a stink she very well could have a real good case. Not only did they suspend her for a perfectly legal act, they made a HUGE deal of it and have certainly damaged her in a significant way!

You seem to know quite a bit about this.....

intelligent response would have been "seen your my space page might want to rethink that photo some parents might get upset"

In my state, a probabationary teacher can be 'non-renewed' with no reason given. As a matter of fact, that is usually the recommended way to procede in order to avoid any legal fight over 'cause.'

Once the probationary period is over, the rules change and detailed 'cause' must be explained in writing with chances for hearings, improvement periods, etic. If she was probationary, her only court will be that of public opinion. She may win that one.

Sniper, if you really feel this way you shouldn't be posting to THR or other internet forums.

Morality police alert.

The only point would be on people's heads who think like this.
