Scope base/mounting problem

So I purchased a new to me Model 70 classic in 270win. Anyway, ordered some bases and rings for it (Leupold #50020 base). The front base screws seemed to have stopped and/or bottomed out before the base got tight. Rear is tight. Has anyone else ever had this problem before? Should I try some shorter screws?

Screws may be of different lengths. If holes go clean thru action, bolt can hit the screws.

I have shortened screws to fit blind holes.

2 pcs bases can be different heights, different screws.

It sounds like your screws are too long. Some bases come with different lengths of screws. Maybe you put a short one in the wrong place? Several years ago I bought an assortment of ring and base screws from Midway. It was the best $10 I ever spent!
