I bought a brand new Winchester Model 70 and while I was at Cabelas I noticed the Redfield scope bases were on sale. Seeing as how I needed some for the new rifle, I picked up a pair clearly marked as being for the Model 70. Of course I felt a bit guilty putting $10 bases on a $850 rifle but I figured Redfield was a trusted brand. I am using Millett rings and should have bought Millet bases too...

It appears they decided to put two of the same base in the same package which is not correct for the Model 70. The front base sits about 1/8" higher than the year. Luckily I align and lap all my rings and found this error that could have busted my scope. Looks like I'm in the market for nicer bases. Any recommendations?

My M70s (well, pretty much all of my hunting rifles) sport DNZ Gamereaper one piece mounts. I've been very pleased with them, and you can usually shop around online and find them in the $50 - $60 range.

Do you have the bases reversed. The thicker base goes on the rear receiver.

That's the weird part: both bases were the exact same. I checked before I put them on and then really checked after I put them on.

Looking at them, it was clear something wasn't right. The rear mounting area has a very gradual radius of probably 6" and the front mounting area has a radius of about 0.75". The front base had a big air gap showing.

Either they were packed wrong or someone in design screwed up here...

Another vote for DNZ products. The phone support is very good - no paging through catalogs on their end, if you're put on hold it's very brief, and you get to talk to a guy that's actually making the products. They know their stuff.

Plus, it's nice to support the economy of North Carolina.

Lots of bases to choose from.......... all pretty much the same.

Nothing wrong with Redfield bases. Even though you seem to have had one.

Weaver bases, Burris Signature Zee rings (posi-line inserts to avoid scope marking).

No need to lap.
