I have decided my next rifle will be a Savage 10FP in .308. The scope I want to mount on it will be a Leupold Mark 4 LR/T 3.5-10x40 with M3 target knobs.

Looking at scope bases, what would be the maximum range/elevation adjustment I could get out of this scope using a standard base vs. the 20 moa cant? I am aware of the considerable drop a .308 has at longer ranges.

If I opt for the base with the 20 moa cant, can I still get a 100 yd. zero without bottoming out the elevation adjustment, or is the 20 moa setup going to shoot several inches high at 100 yds?

I normally shoot at ranges from 100-300yds. but would like the option of longer range if possible.

Thanks.

I have the Ken Farrell 0 MOA base for my Savage 10FP-LE1 standard with a Sightron SII 3-12x42mm 1" tube scope. Off hand I don't know how much adjustment it has, but I zeroed at 600 yds and used the mildots for closer ranges.

Also, I think scopes with 30mm tubes have more internal adjustment.

You could check at Sniper's Hide they have a couple long range forums.

Thanks wintermute76,

I am probably going to go with a standard base, and work with that. (Not in a big hurry or anything.) I actually have never shot beyond 300 yds., but would like to get into longer range shooting.

This will be my second bolt action rifle. My other setup is your basic, run-of-the-mill hunting rifle. Remington 700 ADL in 7mm Mag. with a Leupold 3-9x40 Vari XII. I am comfortable with this rifle out to 300 yds. but want something I can "dial in". I have heard nothing but good things about the Savage.

Thanks.

My old .30-06 which I load to about .308 ballistics calls for 17 MOA to go from 100 to 600 yards and another 22 MOA to 1000. My old Vari-X III has only about 40 MOA of adjustment max, so I use a tapered base which puts 600 nearly at the bottom and 1000 above center, with no hope of a 100 yard zero.

But if you don't plan to shoot past 600 yards, a flat base should do. You might have to shim one end a few thousandths, depending on how true your receiver and bases are machined.

Some of the tactical and match scopes, usually in 30mm tubes, have 90-100 MOA of adjustment range and will cover the field from standard bases.

But it also depends on how large your objective is and how high your rings are..........

You may be able to have your cake an eat it too.......or not!
