Hi,

What kind of scope bases / ring combos will allow the scope to clear the wing safety?

I have a Leupold 3-9x33 and I'm thinking of Leupold 1pc base with medium rings. Anybody try something similar to this? Do I need high rings instead?

I like to mount a scope as low as possible. It's a cheek-weld thing.

IMO, the safety is relatively unimportant. I prefer to have the bolt handle up. But there are after-market safeties to replace the original.

While high enough rings will allow a safety use I would have the 'mauser' safety replaced with the much lower and superior design of a M70 type safety.

A safety on any gun is very important to me. I much prefer safeties that control the firing pin even when its in the 'bolt opening position'.

Here is a Brno 22F that I had a M70 type safety put on.

You can find drop in low scope safeties for Mausers for around $30. Trust me that it's money well spent. A scope mounted high enough to clear the military safety is high enough to completely ruin any chance of a decent cheek weld, and therefore your accuracy.

Are there shorter stubbier wing-safeties that retain the 3 position safety but are just shorter so they don't stick out as high in the 90 degree position?

Which are the best Mauser aftermarket safeties?

I heard that you can disassemble the bolt as easily with the Timney one and you need a coin to keep the striker back to take it apart.

The Buehler style two position safeties work well, and keep the original bolt shroud. They may not be as attractive as M70 style safeties, and they do not allow for opening the bolt with the safety engaged, but they work as well as any factory two position safety.

The two position safety recommended by the others is a lever that stick straight out to the left when the safety is in the fire position. It raises up about 30 degrees when the safety is in the safe position. I had one on a Mauser deluxe action and it worked great. A Leupold standard scope mount will work with low rings if you remove a small amount of metal from the top of the lever where it connects to the bolt shroud. Medium mounts will work without removing any metal. It is the best compromise without spending a lot of money ($250) for the bolt shroud with the Model 70 type safety. BW

For years I had the two position Buehler Style safety on one of my M-98s. But I changed it over to a Dakota M-70 style a year or two ago. I am still not sure which one I like better.
