Hi,
I have a Marlin 1895 guide gun and would like to put a forward mounting scope on it. I had purchased the XS scout scope mount and previously put on the ghost ring rear and a large front sight which works fine. I would like the gun to get out to 100 yards and am considering a scope. What are your recommendations for one keeping it under 250 dollars? I have old eyes and wear progressive lenses. I feel that a scope may help me get out to this distance accurately. What are your suggestions or am I asking too much from my equipment and not enough on myself. Thanks for your responses.

Frisco.

I only put a scope on my marlin 45/70 for loads that I try and even then I use the peep site. These guns are not for prairie dogs at 600 yds they are for very big game under 75 yds. I am 61 and have no trouble with the ghost ring site on mine

Put a 1-4X20 scope on it mounted conventionally. They work better in every way compared to the forward mounted scopes. Better light transmission, much easier to pick up targets up close as long as it is on 1X and far more accurate for longer shots on 4X. Scopes and mounts cost a lot less to boot and it doesn't mess with the guns balance.

The purpose of mounting a scope out on the barrel was to work around top ejecting rifles like Winchesters or for loading bolt rifles via stripper clips. Neither are a factor here.

I have a standard eye relief 2.5x20 on a 7.62x39 black rifle, and a 1.5x5x32 on a .243 single shot. Both have reticules that encourage fast target acquisition. I love them both.

Just a thought....but what about a muzzleloader scope? Longer eye relief and meant to take a beating. I have a cabellas branded one on my 50 cal that works very well. It was less than $150 if I recall.
