Go with the Marlin.. I had one in .35 Rem. 336C.

One of the best guns I've ever owned.
I kick myself daily for selling it.

Hope to get another one soon. .35 Rem. or 45-70 gooberment.

TIP: Williams makes REALLY good rear sights.
Something to think about if you don't NEED a scope.
Do it yourselfer.. No Smith needed.

Screw out the rear ring and you have a REALLY fast acquisition rear.
Put it back if you want to drive nails..

Well, I couldn't put my hands on a Henry. I didn't like the way the small lever felt on the straight stock guide gun. I preferred the look of the laminate wood to the new Remlin walnut. I ended up with a gbl model which also had a better recoil pad. so far I'm pretty pumped. I shot it with stock sights tonight and was very happy. How do you guys like the XS/other peep sight set-ups? Is it hard to get precision out of that huge aperture?

If you learn how to use an aperture sight, you never see it. You are aware of its presence but you are looking through it, not at it. When you shoulder the rifle, you look through the rear sight and it automatically centers the front sight.

I have one on my Winchester 1895 and it is one of the faster sights I use.

bscott29: I am a Marlin fan and shoot them most of the time. I have a few Winchesters but prefer Marlins. Don`t know any thing about Henry`s so I can`t help you there. I have a couple of Guide Guns I guess that is what you would call them in a 444 and 450 Marlin that wear scopes and both have short barrels, but my favorites have long barrels. The Marlin I shoot the most is a long barreled 1895CB in 45-70. I prefer it for Cowboy Action Shooting and Hunting as well. It is a great Deer and Pig rifle and most of my shots are 100 yds or quite a bit less. I have killed 3 Deer and several Pigs, with my 1895 CB in 45-70. It is not a problem to mount a scope on most any of the Marlin`s my Son and I own. And with a scope on one of our Marlins a 200 yd shot is really not a problem. IMHO a Marlin 45-70 scoped or just wearing iron sights is a Great choice.
